This kit is on my list to get. I was going to do the 1/144th version but I would rather have the 1/72nd to go with the type VII c I have (yet to build). This could be my DDD2 boat!

wow
Aud 70 would mean about 44 €.
For that price I simply can't let this one slip by.
How is Special Hobby known for it's eye for details? (never bought a SH kit before)

AUD70 is considerably more than I paid for my Revell Type VII but, as the old Airfix S-boot is now selling for AUD80 here, it is a very reasonable price for what should be a well detailed kit.
Special Hobby's other U-boote kits will be very tempting!

David,
you should look for the Airfix Schnellboot (E-boat) on E-bay. Although they sometimes go away for the same amount of money (say 50+€), I was lucky to get mine for 22€. Still too much considering Revell's fantastic kit that you get for 15€ in a hobby shop (if available).
Skipper,
thanks a lot. I'm still trying to get that XXIII out of my mind , that keeps on calling "Buy me, build me ..." And now you come along with a sweet type II. Maybe you have an 1/72 type XXI or Gato/Balao in reserve ? Or a nice Fletcher DD ? Arrgh !
Anyway, could be worth another scratchbuilding effort, let's say in 2010 ? If the other projects are finished, of course...
And I already know, whose gallery I'll be pillaging for reference ... YOURS !!!
Just kidding, Rui, keep us informed

Cheers

   Buccaneers, Scavangers and Pirates
Buccaneers, Scavangers and Pirates This is the right place for them
 Aaargh :-)
Aaargh :-)Well I have to scan my pictures of the only Type II U-boot and make another picture feature

It's in Suomenlinna Island, just 15 minutes of ferry across Helsinki, Finland!
I took the pictures back in 1999 in September - but just of the outside, since it was closed for visitors

Another task for me to do - so little time and work to be donne!
Frank, no have not a Type XXI, IX, Walther U-boot or Gato/Balao in my "pocket"! But if I could I would

 Keep up the good work

Scott,
100US$ is quite a bit.But I'm sure I can get it cheaper here in Germany (the title sounds familiar); I also have some Polish PhD students in my lab who could try to find it in Poland. Anyway, thx for the tip.
At AMAZON they sell a series called "Vom Original zum Modell ..." that covers the types VII, IX, XXI for 10€ each. They might also have editions about the types II and XXIII. I think someone on this board gave me the tip,
The booklets itself contain lots of detail photos, plans (but way too small to work with) and some drawings. Ok for the price (better than nothing)
Rui,
PLEASE feel free to do so !!!!

The "Vom Vom Original zum Modell " series comprise the following titles:
- Type VII-C
- Type IX
- Type XXI
- Type XXIII
- Type XXIV and Walther U-boot
- Type II
This last (Type II) it's the only one that it's missing in the my library.
I found this books excellent for period pictures, plans and diagrams and also include a series of photos of scratchbuilt models, according to the plans. Also bear in mind that this books serve also as a catalog for full size plan sheets from Motorbuch Verlag...
But for me they have been doing it service well
As I have previously said to Scott, that may be a good acquisition, and since it has a chapter on my favorite subject (kleinkampfmittel) with colour plates, I think I'll try to get this book next month
The Type II pictures will be online tomorrow

Hyperscale has a brief update on MPM's Special Hobby forthcoming releases and the Type XXIII is described as injection moulded "with resin and photoetched parts".
My anticipation is building!!

The Airfix E boat is in my local shop for £27! I bought mine about 10 years or so ago in a local toyshop sale (every September they'd have a big clearout in readiness for Xmas) and I paid £10 for it, I think at the time it was about £15 or so.
I fancy the idea of the Revell S boot but will have to wait until pay day...
Incidentally, look out for Revell's Kriegsmarine figures in 1/72 scale, finely detailed and bags of diorama potential too.

My Special Navy XXIII arrived yesterday, a couple of days after placing the order (NKR Models is about 150km from my home).
a couple of days after placing the order (NKR Models is about 150km from my home).
The kit comes in a large box with a big piece of foam rubber to stop things rattling around (or to fill the void).
The kit comprises 24 short run injection moulded parts (including display stand), 11 resin parts and a photo etched fret. The injection moulded and resin parts are crisply moulded and there's no troublesome flash or injection marks. You will need to add 'scratchbuilt' wire and plastic rod to complete the kit.
There is no interior detail but the conning tower is well detailed with resin and etched components.
The base of the conning tower has open vent holes that do have some flash and it will be worth cleaning them up. That should create an appearance of scale thickness too.
As there's no interior, you will be able to see straight through the conning tower. I will insert some plastic card to represent the presuure hull inside the conning tower.
Construction looks to be relatively straight forward and shouldn't take too long.

I Just picked up my Special Navy Sub today. The type XXIII is very nice. As was stated by DJC it should build into a great representation of the type. Even more exciting is on the side of the box 3 more subs are listed as in the works!!!!!!!!
German Type II
German Hecht
German Hai (Shark)
It looks like Special Navy is going to take off and run with the 1/72nd subs where Revell left off.
Just for an idea here is a link to the Hecht

I would love to see a type VIIc in 350 scale to go with the rest of my collection. The only sub I really want to see in 72nd scale would be a Type IXc with wintergarten. Also want one of those in 350. I have a 8 sub collection of those 400 scale from the Polish company Mirage...They are limited too type I's, VII's and IX's though...lots of interesting varieties though. I think that Type XXIII was pretty rare wasn't it. I know the XXI was, but gad what a beautiful sub they are

A test fit of the two hull components revealed that they don't provide an exact match. However, the top of both hull parts seem to have an identical kink.
The failure of the hull components to mate correctly is due to slight warping of one side rather than an incorrect or mis-cast component. I have used thick plastic card spacers or bulkheads to get both halves to align and the last test fit was pretty close.
After a little packing and trimming, I should be able to get a perfect fit.
The very basic plans and few photographs that I have been able to find suggest that a couple of minor modifications (keel and vents) may be required but I'm not going to carry out major surgery unless I'm convinced that it's necessary.
The kit is nowhere near as good as Revell's recent 1/72 kits but it provides more of a challenge and I think that completing it will be very rewarding.
Any thoughts on suitable 1945 crew figures from the range now available for the Revell u-boot?
