This can’t be 5-D can it?

I just started painting the 1st turret on my USS Pennsylvania for the Dreadnoughts campaign.

I got some Model Master 5-D Dark grey paint for it but now that I see it on the plastic it looks really dark.

Here’s a picture of it.

So is it just me or is this to dark for 5-D.

And if so about how much would it need to be lightened?

Thanks.

Hi Jacob,

5D was very dark grey-like the color you have there. Having said that most have painted their kits with a lighter grey for "scale effect" I used Gunship grey on my 1/350 Arizona. I think if you use it on your smaller ship you'll be happy with the result.

Hi Jacob

5-D Dark Gray is really a dark gray!
Apparently there's nothing wrong with your colors - appart from not being used to see so dark colors on ships, right?

Just one question: did you prime the turret first?

I don't know, the photos I've seen show that color to be very dark. I'm not sure how much the scale affect would lighten it, but if that were 1/1 I'd say it was right on.

On the first paint chip graphic, it's the far left sample on the second row...

I would go with it. I know its a different navy, but the dark grey on my Bismarck is close to that color

I guess it is 5-D then.

I think I’ll try lightening it for scale effect then.
I’ll add a little white or even just a lighter gray and see what I come up with.
I’ll keep it dark just not quite that dark.

and skipper I haven’t been priming before using acrylics. They usually turn out fine after 2 or 3 coats.
The turret only has 1 coat on it right now so that’s way the paint job looks poor.

I’ll let you know what I come up with.

Just mixed a little paint up and here’s what I got.

I think it looks a lot better this shade.

I added 3 parts white to 10 parts 5-D.

From what I can see, it look a good scale effect on the 5-D
