Steven i am building a revell 1:72 U boat and i have just finished Future "waxing" it and am ready for washing and decaling it. now the advice i need is how do i wash the sides of the Hull and what colors do i use? i did the deck with a black testorsthinned out with testors thinner now can i use water instead of thinner because the thinner left some staines on the deck?? and what did you use for the rust??

and nice job on your sub

Hurry up Steve or I will anwser the question before you do!

I used burnt sierra for my uboat, see this article:
http://nl.armorama.com//features/654

I mixed it with white spirit, and while the wash was still wet, I used Model Masters rust for the rust on my boat! More about this in the article as well!

Hi Matt!

Sorry for the delay...just got home from work.

I didn't use washes on mine. I like to use artist chalks and build them in layers in tandem with dry brushed enamels. In regards to the rust, I again used artist chalks and built it up in layers of chalk and flat clear coats until...it looked right...

For me, it's easier to control the chalks rather than fighting the washes...I don't have to worry about stains.

Or, try Martin's method, I think his turned out fantastic! It's whatever you feel comfortable with.

Mine isn't the 1/72nd boat, mine was the smaller 1/1/25th. I haven't built my 1/72nd yet.

Glad you liked it and please by all means, post some photos of yours, we'd all like to see them.

Take care
Steve

No, I just apply them where I want them. Any larger areas that had color shades, were just lightened base colors dry brushed on. In regards to the flat application, I use Testors Model Master flat lacuer instead of Future.

Hope I've helped you in some way.

Take care
Steve

I'm no expert, I'm learning just like everyone else. I do what works for me and is easier for my level of abilities . Like I said, Martin's or anyone else's techniques produce fantastic results, it's a matter of what works best for you. That's the beauty of Armorama, it's a smorgasborg of techniques from a massive group of talented people, you can pick and choose and synthesize it into your own style....cool huh?

I forgot to mention that I just grind off some chalk onto a piece of sand paper and dip my brush in the pile and apply.

thanks steve i'm new to modeling ive done three models and just purchased a air brush what a difference. The overall plan is to diplay the model with the hopes of showing a torpedo being fired but i have to figure out how to make the water and the dimentions and scale of the torpedo as well. But that is way down the road right know i'm getting the courage to decal and weather the model.

Hey don't worry about that this is your third model, we all started as newbies. In regards to your modeling the torpedo shot, make sure to take some time and go through the archived articles and pick up some ideas and pointers there and most of all, don't be afraid to ask anyone for advice. Like I said, the talent here abounds and drips from the walls. You've found the best environment to learn in.

Plus, I'm getting back into this hobby after almost a 17 year break to serve in the military and then raise a family...so really, I'm starting over ...so we can learn together

Take care and keep us in the loop

Matt - have you started painting yet? I've just started building my 1:72 and would love to see pix of yours. Colors: there's a great article on authentic colors at:

I've got some Humbrol/WEM equivalent info at:

Martinnnn - nice paint job! Good to see your build and pix.

matt - this guy did an awesome rust job (think he used very dark for deep, deep rust, then lighter and redder around):

I'm intrigued by your idea of real rust, using it like a chalk? tell me your secrets!

Now that's interesting! I look forward to seeing how that will turn out.

In regards to the photos, how much gallery space do you have left? I have an alternative if you haven't enough space.

Rokket2001 yea i'm using stealwool (ironwool) in a cup and waiting for it to rust up then take the rust and place it on the model like chalk i'll try it on some spare parts and see how it turns out. Kinda nervous about trying out on the sub it was pretty expensive about 65$ canadian.

95Bravo what do you mean about gallery space??

As a member here you have some gallery space in the member's gallery that you can post photos of your sub to.

I would suggest trying it out on a junk model first, if you have concerns about the process.

It's a nice clean build Matt. The darkening of the deck did provide a better demarcation of it and the hull. The only thing I woud have suggested would have been to drill out the limberholes in the bow. The only critical comment I would make is that the periscopes seem askew, but that may just be the camera angle and I think that the ship's bell would be brass. However, someone may have greater insight on that than I.Other than that, She's sweet! I look forward to seeing how the real rust works out.

Nice build!

yea the conning tower is not glued on yet due to decaling as well as the periscopes i still have to glue them down. But allot of lessons learned and i'm taking my time had some running with the future wax thing and am trying to smooth them out. but the rust is comming along.
