Hello,
I'm looking for reference on RN Steel carrier decks. I'm displaying my RN Corsair for an upcoming show and I'd like to be as accurate as possible regarding the base.
The Corsair was flown from HMS Vengence around June/July 1945 and the photo shows a very smooth steel surface. Where can I find a layout of how the carrier deck plates were arranged? What size were the plates? Were the plates welded and then the seams ground down?....so many questions....am I being too uptight about nothing..
Thanks for your patience
Pete

Thumbing through my carrier book, I found a picture of the deck of the Illustrious and Ark Royal that you could pick some detail (minimal) out of. It appears the plates were fairly large (almost as big as an airplane) and that they are ground down welded.. You can spot the seams, but they look to be around the size as say between concrete slabs on a large bridge. Hope this helps.

Hi Pete,
If you check out this site HMS Glory Association and go through the pics there are some which show the flightdeck surface of a Colossus class carrier. They may be of help.
