Hi Skipper!

Yes, it's going to be amazing, the combos. I've found some evidence that "my" boat, Grouper, had a new limber hole pattern by 45. I'm just re-reading Clear the Bridge (story of Tang), and they stripped the periscope shears and added an oval platform, a sort of crows nest for an extra lokout! (cool!).

If I build Grouper in the 1957 config (when my mate was aboard), she'd have a schnorkel and heaps of radar.

I'm trying to "nail down" some of the details. I'm hoping the community can work together on a few of the more popular boats (that people want to build) so we can make some complete(-ish) fact files on some boats.

It's funny that both US and German authorties kept changing/adding deck guns and AA guns, but in end they proved almost worthless.

You're so right about the $$ for AMers. I would love to come up with an AM idea and produce something. I'm sure (at least hoping) Steve Nuttal will do scopes, barrels, and prop shafts.

In this case I think I will go for the USS Pampanito - I have visited it and I think I have good references on it!
Of course I could change my mind ...

I am sure Steve will go on this!
Steve, are you listening?

Excellent choice, Skipper - mid-late war, Balao, execelltn references as you say. Just checked out the Pampanito site, looks like she's being treated well. I think the balao will be lenghtened a little bit in the hull.

If I was back near fall River MA and near Lionfish I might be tempted to do her for the same reasons. But because of my mate I think I'm locked into Grouper.

Actually (about the lenght) they are of the same dimentions - the difference between a Gato and a Balao are ticker pressure hull , different machinery and some more technological updates that are not "visible" to the regular modeler - unless you want to make a cutaway version of the Gato in the same way that CMK did for the VII-C U-Boat (the five interior resin sets).
As for Pampanito references don't forget to check our own Armorama USS Pampanito Walkaround here:

My advice is: build them both!
I am considering having more than one, because of the different looks that with some of the previously mentioned AM Parts, in this particular case, the Sails, and painting schemes will give to the "beast"!

Yes Martin, it surelly will look great!

To Wink:
Another thing that I remembered and that will make a great AM stuff are the post war mods. Guppy convertions will make more modelers to build this submarine, because some of these were sold / exported to other countries and would be interesting to see it in other "clothes" - we are always looking forward to see models in our own country colours (at least I am) - although this is not the case for Portugal and Gatos/Balaos/Guppys.

I stopped off at the local Hobby Lobby on the way home last night and they had the U-Boat. I'd forgotten how big that beast was. I can't imagine the box this one is going to be in. My model case is only 34 inches wide, I'll have to make a whole new shelf for it. Of course I'll also have to make a dog house big enough to put it in out back when my wife kicks me out of the house for bringing it home.

Hi Rodger...

It all depends on the way that they are going to engeneer the hull parts... if it is going to be similar to the VII-C (two hull parts) or in four hull parts (similar to the old Matchbox Flower Class Corvete) - either way it will be a BIG BOX that it will be difficult to hide when arriving home and even after that!!

- What's that?
- What?
- That Huge Box?
- Oh that... it has been there for ages!!! See the dust a the scrathes on the box lid...
- It says here it was released in 2006!
- Hmmm, must be a typo!

Where were you hiding when I snuck the DML early Tiger into the house?

Thanks for the laugh. Even though it's Friday I really needed on today.

I've got to create some sort of money spending check system to make sure I don't spend to much on my models

I want this one!

Hi Martin

Just put aside €10.00 each month (if you can, of course) and when the model is out you will have enough for it and some extra paints or stuff - this way it will be "easy", instead of taking the all amount - just a thought!

Skipper - thanks on the length, I thought the Balao was about 1 to 2 foot longer...oops!

Not going to do a cutaway, would be wonderful, nut the yill is nice and the extra work...oh boy. "Build 2" - would be awesome, but I think 1 will be all I can handle! GUPPY - a forum mate is going to build a GuppyII - weird but streamlined sail, looks funky.

Hull - I'm thinking they won't do 2 pieces for 52", but maybe...one HUUUGE box!

Halfyank - I'm in the (pardon the pun) same boat - no display sapce, but my wife has agreed we shall get a new bookcase just for the U-boot and Gato, even if we have to have the manufacturer custom extend one.

I've put in some pages on specific boast (that exist today) as museum boats) for research at my Revell Gato forum - It'd be great if everyone contributed a gallon of diesel or a bolt or whatever to get complete (relevant to modellers) details on boats that exist to make it easy for everyone. If you have a fact or detail, contribute it!

Howdy fellas

Being one of the resident, tried & true fans of "large-scale" models, I went ahead and pre-ordered my Gato this morning .......at 52" I just couldn't help myself.

Now.....who's up for building it quayside?.......hmmm?

Tread.

EDIT: Heyyyy......I just had a thought {trouble, I know...} If indeed Revell will have a hand in bringing this kit to the shelves of our LHS's, would this mean that it's possible to expect at the same time that this humongous kit will also grace the shelves of your local Hobby Lobby??.......including their 50% off sale?....?

Now THERE'S something to salivate about!

We can certainly hope Tread. THAT might put me over the top to get it.

SWMBO "What is THAT!"
Me "It's a Gato, they've never made one like this before."
SWMBO "What did it cost?"
Me "It was 1/2 off at Hobby Lobby"
SWMBO "But what did it cost?"
Me "Look how much I saved!"
SWMBO "But what did it cost!!!!!"
Me "What that catalog number for that ring you wanted again..."

Rodger never break - never :-)
End of

Hmm
A streamlined Guppy would be a very interesting change!
And at least a total of 10 different options from 1930's to 1960's

How difficult would it be to convert to a Tench class - The Torsk?

I think you'd need to find out the type of sail Torsk had. The basic dimensions between Gato and Tench classes are close enough, but the various sail types would be the main thing you'd have to convert.

Looks like mainly the sail, as Halfyank says. The website (which you probably have seen) - http://www.usstorsk.org/ - shows a good pic, with the hull looking pretty Gato/Balao and the sail being a tall, weirdo precursor to "modern".
I've started a topic for history/detailing at my Gato forum on Torsk.

Would you be doing 1945, or 50s with Schnorkel? That pic show s aclutterddeck, but would be interesting.
