Knowing that it's a Revell-Ogram kit, I still wonder if they've re-tooled the molds or is this just a supersized Lionfish?

Man I hope not.

I can't believe they'd do THAT. If they did the AM people would be salivating like nobodies business.

Shoot, if the AM folks go even half as much as they did for the U-boat there will more than enough options to keep the interest up. How big is thing expected to be. Steve says 52" That in itself may hurt sales. B..I..G difference bwn 52 and 33

Yeah, but think of it....52 inches...that would stop people dead in their tracks...talk about a conversational piece!!!!!

I don't know, I wouldn't think it would hurt sales it being that long. What would kill sales would be if it were my other fear...

I agree with Rodger -- be much more likely to get one of the "good guys" subs .... But you gotta figure the A/M folks won't do much because it is a good guy sub ... That's my cynic side showing ...

Any reviews out on this yet ???

I've started a research "sub" forum just for this model over at at:
http://p104.ezboard.com/brevellgatosub

What I know - it's based on the USS Cobia (which is apparently near Revell on Lake Michigan). Cobia is an Elec Boat boat, commissioned in early 44, at about the same time USS Tang was commssioned in Mare Island.

Have heard rumors that Revell of Germany is actually doing the production end, but might be bad info.

52" - yeah, baby, yeeeee-ah... :-)

Hi all

I think we still need to wait another year to get our claws on it...
AM stuff will always appear - backdating, wooden decks, weapons alternatives, flood holes pe sets (oval, square, rounded), different conning towers and Cold War sails (atlantic sail, portsmouth sail and all cold war developments), Radar picket boats - it's an endless world even bigger than with the VII-C!
This is a good opportunity for any AM Company that is willing to take a shot at it (and as you can see there are a lot - and I am not even talking about 1:72 crew members figurines!!)

But I can say it is a most welcome model to "our workbench" - perhaps for DDD3 :-)

I would give very serious consideration to purchasing this kit. Where I would put it, when finished I don't know, but.... oh yeah, I could bring it over to the USS Ling......

As a side note, about 10 years ago, myself and a few others attempted to build the Combat Models Vac-u-form kit, for the museum, well needless to say we never finished it. I believe the one hull side being a different size than the other (about 1/2 inch all around) was a super major factor in abandoning ship. BUT H&R Products were nice enough to donate all the 1/72 scale ship fittings they proguce for the project. I still have the box packed away, maybe it would be nice to do it with this kit when it is released.

Honestly,

At $88.00 for a 52 inch kit..how can you go wrong? Other than if it turns out to be dog. Wonder why the Revell-Ogram folks didn't have a preview like they did with the VIIC? At least with that one, you had an idea of what you were getting into and didn't base your order sight unseen.

If it's true that RoG is doing the production work, then the qulaity may be along the same lines as the VIIIC......Oh dear, I've gone and done it again, I've drooled on myself.

I WANT MY GATO!

Oh...I forgot, I mentioned this lil' gem to the Frau. I was given the raised eye brow and asked..."I suppose you think you need this." I said, "No.....I know I need this. "

Muhahahahahahahahaha

Wow!..I've been hoping for this ever since the U-Boat came out.. I have built the U-Boat and it already dominates a long shelf in the bedroom (I have a very patient wife ).
There is also announcement of a 1/72 Type XII U-Boat,

http://www.squadron.com/ItemDetails.asp?item=RG5045

But the description is quite confusing. Anyone know about this?

Hi Dave

Yes, Combat Models could be a pain... but as long as you had the patience, reference (lot's) and some medium/advanced modeling skills, you could turn those vacform hulls into beauties - unless faults like that that you stated occur!
H&R Products could be a usefull source (as they have been for the 1/72 Elco 80ft PT-Boats in the last decade - before WEM decided to takle this boat)!

I think that this is a good motivator for your Photo Report Trip to Hackensack (hint hint hint)

Steve,

I think that Revell-Ogram is working in this together with Revell-Germany and I think that quality control on new molds are very high/tight - I don't think that they are willing to spend a few millions of euros/dollars on a "dog"!
I think that the previous VII-C in 1/72 was a perfect benchmark product to see what the modelers wanted and if they (we) were willing to spend some cash on a big box!!
I think that they are only making the Gato, because the VII-C today is still a good seller - A new chapter in ship modeling is wide open: Big ships in 1/72!

Say perhaps.....a 1/72nd Fletcher Class?

D'oh to dare to dream!

If that were to happen...I wonder if it would fit in the cardboard box I would no doubt be living in after I were kicked out of the house?

Hi Ed...
It's a typo, meaning it should be stated VII-C/41 (they swithched the roman numeral V (five) for a X (ten)) ence the confusion.
Check this tread here:

It's all explained there - hope this helps!

Once my daughter goes off to college next year, and I immediately grab her room for my modeling den, I wouldn't mind some more BIG ships, like this 1/72 Gato, maybe a 1/72 XII, so I can model the captured U-505, and possibly a 1/72 Buckley class U.S. DE, to model the ships from the classic Enemy Below.

Hmm I think you mean the Type IX - longer than the VII-C...

Rodger, I understand your feeling and I am totally with you!
I (also) need my modeling den!!
Already have the solution in my mind, I know the place where we would move to - only missing some... financial issues :-) :-)

We're trying to purchase the home behind us and it sets on a 2 acre lot (0.8 hectares) and if we get it, I plan to add to the home loan enough funds to build a 15x20 building to move my modeling room out of the house. No more complaints about fumes, compressor noise, or anything else.

Hello fellow submariners!

What an amazing announcement! It is about time they paid
attention to the silent hunters. The Gato will be most welcome.
Who knows, this seems to be a great begin: the era of large
scale (1:72) subs. What's next ? Hopefully a Type IX and a
Type XXI !!! and how about the Japanese fleet subs !!!

Yes sirs, let us wait and see!!!
Have a nice day and happy modelling,

Torpedo Los !!!

Joe

PS MPM (Special Navy) has already annouced their future releases
Type II u-boat and the Hecht and yes in 1:72 scale.
Their Type XXIII is a real beauty.

WOW leave the boards for a day and BIG news shows up. This will be an addition to the fleet for sure.
As I look for my new home I will be making sure I have a library in the house to display all of my subs. I have plans to build 2 of the type VIIcs. My Special Navy sub is ready for DDD2. This is Great news!!!! An Allied sub to add to the 1/72nd fleet!!!

Hi Wink!
As you must know, and speaking for the period only till '45 you have four different sails! With this comes a huge array of weaponry and different deck layouts (two dingys, one dingy, inflatable rafts hatch).
Then cames the "difficult" part of the patern for the flooding/limber holes (as stated on a previous post) - if these different sails, wooden decks and PE Limber holes are released as AM parts you can build any of the Gato/Balao fleet subs!
There is always the "tradicional" gun barrels and periscope array to be made in brass/aluminium
It's money in the pocket for the AM Producers!!!!

If they want to go further into the cold war, you will have tons of stuff to make (sails, radars, sonars, new bows)

So I think that the potencial on this little beast iss far more bigger than with the VII-C - it's just a question of price/quality/availability

Just my 2 (euro) Cents
