I have the Revell beast and I need some info - I found a pic. that showed the U-69 with the conning tower addition - another antenna I think... Anyway I want to keep the net cutter as I really like the way it looks but I have conflicting info on the net cutter. Other than the one pic showing the cutter and the antenna it seems that by the time they fitted the antenna they removed the cutters. Any body have info on this? I also ran across a picture of a late war sub with a net cutter and some kinf or direction finder thingie ( big square thing mounted to the port side or the conning tower) any body got any info?

BM2 - I found this:

"The first VIIC boat being commissioned was the U-69 in 1940."

That would mean there's a very high chance it had a net cutter.

(Generally they did not put cutters on later boats.) But I don't know if they bothered to remove cutters from older boats... hope it helps a little.

The rank strucure is based on amount of postings. As you post more by either asking or answering questions, your rank goes up. I have 4 stars because I am a regular chatty Cathy and have been doing it for three years. As to the other questions. Early versions had the cutters and later didn't. They would remove them as well. Case in point. The kit has U-552 and has the early and late set-up. Just research your sub if you see a setup you like in a picture then do it. There are so many combinations and variances that almost anything / combination would have been on some boat I would think

Thanx - I was just jiking about the seaman recruit thing - I was a BM2 in the Navy and there is no form of life lower in the fleet than a non designate E-1

Hi John,

I don't have any photos of the actual U-69, but there's an excellent diorama by Kelly Quirk called the "Wolf's Den" with U-69 as the subject. Check it out. Very nice.

Howdy BM2,

Even though I've been ' away ' from the site as of late, I still lurk when I can find the time, and try my darndest to remain as helpful as i can......

you said; "...... I also ran across a picture of a late war sub with a net cutter and some kinf or direction finder thingie ( big square thing mounted to the port side or the conning tower) any body got any info? ......."

If I may?......I believe what you are referring to is, one of two things, both of which were examples of the Type VIIC 'active' radar system.
The first example was the FuMO 30, which was an approx. 1.5m X 1m rectangular antenna mounted on a turntable on the port side of the conning tower.
The only other possibility, was the more advanced version of the above system, the FuMO 61, or the 'Hohentweil-U'....which was based on the rather succesful FuMG as used by the Luftwaffe. Both were of the same configuration, and were retractable while underway..........

hth.

Tread

PostScript:......if you need a pic, let me know ;-)

Since I have been building the monster uber-scale 1/32 Andrea boat, I have taken an interest in the Revell kit. I picked one up from Hobby Lobby for a mere $25. I will be hitting you gents up for info as I get ready to build her. I plan on adding all the bells and whistles, minus the resin pressure hull goodies (won't seem em' when its closed up). Hopefully the big boy will be done shortly so I can get the build article submitted and then start on the Revell kit. Off hand, is there any good replaement weapons for the type VII-C? The kit ones looked a little clunky to me. Thanks. "Q"

Steve Nuttal does brass barrells with great little muzzles on the 20mm. There are PE sets for detailing the kit guns. With kiut, PE and brass barrels, you can have nice guns (or at least I'm hoping, I haven't gotten that far yet, but have bought the stuff!).

Steve's site and some links are at my site:

Andrea - wow, do you keep it in the garage? If I had that puppy I'd be all like :-)

It is a commission build. When I can work on it, I place on my Black and Decker Workmate in the garage. Hoping for some warm enough weather soon so I can get some paint on it. I check out the site provided. Thanks for the info. "Q"

Matthew, are you the same guy that's posting pics of your boat on Plastic Pics?

I saw some pics of a 1/32 u-boat sittin' in the garage, also a commission build.

The pics left me wanting to see more pictures. More detail shots.

I would love to build one, but only on commission. I don't know if I could ever afford one of those things.

Could you please post pics of your build?

Take Care,

Jess

Yeah I'm the same guy. I have been waiting for some warmer weather so I can get some primer on the thing. I have more pics planned, but 12 hour work days hamper getting them taken and uploaded. Hopefully this week end I can get some uploaded. Photobucket told me I am over my bandwidth limit for the month, so I may need to upgrade. There will be a feature article on this beast coming soon. I'll get some detail shots to you though. "Q"
