He used a twine , which was probably kit supplied for the cables lowering the ramp. I would think the knotted rope bumper pieces came with the kit and are very realistically painted plastic much akin to what they did on the DUKW. However that is pure speculation on my part as I haven't seen the kit yet.

I realy like this. It goes across several interests, ships, armor, figures. If they figure out a way to put an wingy thingy in the mix you've got all bases covered.
