Hey guys...what do you think about a warship campaign involving the ships that fought in the Leyte Gulf battles. This would open up the subject matter to a host of different ship types:
Fleet carriers
Escort carriers (Taffy 3)
Hybred battleship and cruiser/aircraft carriers
Modern battleships
Pearl Harbor survivors (Pennsylvania, Tennessee....)
Yamato and Musashi
Destroyers and Dstroyer Escorts
See what I mean. Some of the greatest naval battles ever...
Surigao Strait
Samar/San Bernadino Strait
Cape Esgano
Let me know what you think!

nice idea. (off topic) what i was wishing for is war movie or mini series about lingayen and leyte gulf battles. naval ships, carriers, kamikaze and the leyte landing. the war in the pacific has alot of stories to tell..a footnote in the history of WWII.

I'd be up for it, after BB and flatops have ended of course.
I 2nd your hope for a good, unlike Pearl Harbor, movie on Leyte Gulf and Taffee Three.

I'm interested. Somewhere I have a 1/700 USS Johnston started.

Personally, I think it's a banner of an idea, Ken!
This type of campaign would indeed include a vast amount of different types of entry's in one campaign...possibly could even be designed as a group build...your next step would be to propose your ideas to the Campaign Manager here at Armorama (accessible through the Campaigns home page, where it says "submit a campaign")...keep us posted, Bro!

before you submit, you need to include a list of at least 10 interested parties. If it is late enough in the year, I can build my 700 scale Musashi unless we get real picky because my version is the 1942 (initial) version. But with flattops and being campaign manager for MEOW...any sooner and I can't do it. I figure the Lexington will take 3 -4 months with all the modifications and aftermarket stuff I have to do to it, then I've got my campaign to run, so not until July for me

Hey guys...
I'm looking at this being a campaign for the second half of 2006. Probably a good 6 month build. Keep up the chatter, and we'll have our 10 interested parties.

Alright ya bunch of deck apes! I know everybody is getting excited about the flattops campaign. Who would like to see a Leyte Gulf campaign. It is considered the most famous naval engagement in history. The destruction of the IJN. The last of the battleship on battleship engagement. The heroism of the Tin Can Sailors. So, what do you say?

I've got all the AM stuff to add to the 1/350 Tamiya Fletcher, so I'm looking for an excuse to build that. The problem is, I plan on a late war version, with the final AA configuration where they deleted one set of torpedo tubes and added a pair of quad 40mm amidships. I'm just about certain this modification did not appear until 1945 so wouldn't have been in Leyte.
I watched a one hour show on History Channel about the actions of the destroyers when the Japanese force under Adm Ozawa came out and attacked the escort carriers. Their immediate and unhesitating decision to attack (individual destroyers charging into cruisers and battleships) was bravery of the most spectacular kind. It was not unlike the unsupported attack by the US Torpedo plans at Midway. The biggest difference was that unlike Midway, where their actions were more of a disruption which allowed the follow on attack by the dive bombers to be successful, the Taffy destroyer attack, not only broke up the enemy formations, but actually caused some damage with their torpedos.
Great battle and great idea for a campaign!!

You too? When I was back at VMI in the mid 70's I went to town on those IJN 700 scale waterlines. Back then BB and AC cost $4 a cruiser $2 and a destryoer $1. I had 10 battleships, 5 aircraft carriers (they hadn't done the Kaga yet) 12 cruisers, and around 15 -20 destroyers. gave them to a friend right before graduation and he found an empty room and spread them all out in a fleet formation....man was that impressive. ***** just for Tom's info..... the room was "Smokey" Gilliams office. He gave the room to the Miitaria society which was the group of wargamers and modelers and just had a desk in the corner for himself. It was a regular classroom on upper floor of Scott-Shipp

Hi Kenny and all!
I think that a campaign based on a Battle is a great idea! Instead of a type based we have all the types, and planes included, too!
I will give my support to this Valid Campaign, and if it runs in the last half of the year it will be great!
Just a reminder of the campaings running in 2006:
- Garry Beebe's Dreadnoughts
- Garry Beebe's Flattops
- Dive! Dive! Dive! Part 2

Scott-Shipp. What was that?
That was the building you had to walk through to get to the bridge so you could go to LA beach. NEB is where you went to take "Cars and Trucks" or you ducked into to use the toilet after running the block to get white feet again.
Yea yea, I know guys here they go again but just think how much VMI speak you are learning. You might actually be able to sneak into a reunion someday and fool someone.........nahhh>

Count me in for the second half of 2006, I have Tamiya's 1/700 Yamato (special package) ready to go for this one. (Well as soon as Lucky Model deliver anyway). In the meanwhile check out this website for the full story http://www.battle-of-leyte-gulf.com
