I don't know why it would be off topic. If not here, where? Personally I LOVE this kind of stuff. I could never go down in one of those little subs, because I'm just a bit claustophobic, but I love watching things like this.
It's like an old joke where a woman catches her husband looking at Playboy. He says, "I read this for the same reason I read National Geographic, to see on the page the sights I'll never see in real life."
If this show makes it to the states I'll be watching for it.

More undersea archeology....marvelous I've seen pictures of the Bismark and Yamato, and I think they've found a couple of the Midway ships. I'll have to catch it whe they show it

I would watch it, but I do not think they are showing it here in the states yet, not for awhile I would assume.

They've found the Yorktown and pieces of wreckage identified as the Kaga. For more info on that go here.
Kaga Found The real treasure trove of lost ships is Quadalcanal. Ballard found the cruiser Quincy, I could be wrong there but it was one of the three US cruisers sunk at Savo, the HMAS Canberra, IJN Kirishima, quite a few American and Japanese destroyers, the Atlanta, though you couldn't make out much, and several aircraft.

Ah, that's called research and it's an important part of building.

I'm doing a 'virtual build' (taking the bits out of the box and looking at them) too. Mine is the Revell one which I managed to find at the end of last year.
There is an account of the original rediscovery here, with some impressive sonar images

Rodger,
There's a very interesting book by Ballard about the Guadacanal wrecks and battles
THE LOST SHIPS OF GUADACANAL
by Robert D. Ballard and Rick Archbold
ISBN 0-297-81305-6
It's a companion to the TV show and has some really good pics and artist's representations on fold out sheets.

Oh yes, and I've got it. I've got most all of Ballard's books, Titanic, Bismarck, Guadalcanal, Luisitania, one called Lost Liners, and Midway. About the only one I know of his I don't have is about wrecks in the Pacific, but from what I've seen it mainly covers things in the other books.
I'm telling you I'm addicted to underwater archeology. I just love reading about that stuff and looking at the pictures.

Thanks for the link Phil, very useful. Know what you mean about WEM's PE - I've been doing some work on KGV today and blimey, putting together radars and 20mm Oerlikons in 1/700 scale is a bit of a challenge...
Never mind, Ark is 1/600 so she should be a LOT easier!

Late as usual

I have this double NGM presentation taped (VHS). Aired here in 1999 or so...

I also have the book on this same mission - The Lost ships of Guadalcanal by Ballard
And a couple of months ago, there was a program (didn't catch the start - but I think it was National Geographic too) with Dennis Haysbert (the President form the 24 Series) hosting and searching (visiting actually) some of the underwater relics in the Pacific:
The Arizona, the IJN A-Type Target A midget sub sunk before Pearl Harbour raid, the Saratoga and the Nagato at Bikini Atoll
Real nice feature!
