at MosquitoCon 2006, in Wayne NJ. Congrats to Dan Kaplan, who's stunning 1/700 rendition of the IJN light cruiser Noshiro won top honors - snagging the Bill Marshall Memorial Award for Best Ship and the Norm Kennedy Award for Judges Best in Show.

Dan also took 1st place in another ship category with the Japanese DD Asagumo, also in 1/700 scale. These were among 5 1/700 IJN entries that Dan brought with him - others were the carrier Hiryu and the AA cruiser Isuzu.

It was a great show - with almost 500 models entered into the contest.

What a beautiful ship. Which class is this from? Most of the Japanese light crusiers were old klunky looking 3 stackers from the early 20's. Their heavy cruisers were all modern and sleek. I am only familiar with the Yahagi and Oyodo.

Great looking ship. Nice to see a ship take top honours at a competition.

The IJN Noshiro is the second in the Agano Light Cruiser line. The other two vessels being the Yahagi and the Sakawa. They where intended as destroyer flotilla flagships. The Noshiro was launched in July of 1942, and sunk 26th October 1944 by aircraft of the US Hornet and Wasp.

Hi Martin

Great news! It is so hard for ship models to win BOS!!
It is rarely seen
Thanks for sharing this info!

Did you attend it with any of your ships?
Got any photo report to share with us?

Very nice. It just goes to show that you don't have to do anything really fancy, just great modeling techniques, use of materials, seems handled properly, not glue smudges, great paint job, etc.

It was my local IPMS chapter that put on the show - it was our 15th show. I was - for the 9th year - the Head Judge, in charge of getting the judging organized and completed. With almost 500 models in competition (Over 90 1/ 48th scale single engine prop alone!), it was a challenge.

I entered my 1/350 Lexington and a 1/700 Saratoga - as a battlecruiser (Imperial Hobby Productions kit).

I took a 2nd place with the Lex and a 3rd with the Sara (it was in the same category as the Noshiro).

No photos - I was waaaaaay too busy to take pictures, and when I finally got the chance, my batteries died!

Batteries are trainned to do that Martin :-) :-)
You should know better
Congrats on your 2nd and 3rd prizes - it was though competition!!!

I know what you mean with being busy - same thing happened to me the last three editions of ModelTroia contest.. when "suddenly" you are in the Judge team you appear to have little time to take photos and browse around - but you get the chance to see the models better
Also this year it will be our club (AMA - Almada's Modeling Association) tenth expo, so it will be a grand event (I hope). In the last yeras ships have started to be more and better (perhaps the Vice-President has something to do with it :-) :-) )

There's no issue here - it is only exhibition - not a contest so I'll have plenty of time to take pictures (three days!)

I will do a proper Photo Report (as usual)
