This time I won't talk about changing the rank insignias, but maybe the number of posts for rank. I guess we're still going by the Armorama rank system, and I think that means 100 posts for the first "promotion." Since this site is so much more specialized maybe that should be adjusted, to a lower number? I know many people don't care that much about rank, but maybe it would encourage the newbies to post more? As long as they aren't just posting for rank of course.
On a somewhat related topic maybe a special award could be set up for "plank owners?" That would be folks who were regular posters on the Armorama warships forum, and moved over?

Skip, I don't think they're enough trees in Portugal for your post. :-) :-)

I think I would qualify as a plank holder for what it's worth. I'm one of the real real old time guys like skipper. Heck, I even participated in the first group build....Pacific Theater of Operations that was started by Yoda and of course the Unsung Sisters from Half-Yank

On the rank topic, some members seem to have carried their rank over from Armorama to here, and others haven't (me for example...)
What are the criteria for avoiding demotion?

Hi Graham
All started here with zero - me included!
Since I never choose a rank I can say that I am still in my waters

And Kenny,
I think we still have a lot of trees here

But one would do the job :-) :-)

I think in retrospect I will probably leave the ranking system as is for now (restore to single rank and post totals scheme). I may add something that starts tracking number of posts inside specific sites, but this current system is a bit of a mess. #:-)
Stay tuned...

I think Graham is speaking of Gunny and Grumpy Old Man. I understand they were given speical rank insignias on Armorama in return for services rendered to the site. Those carried over when they came here.

The thing that's confusing is logging into one site, with one "identity" and having two different "totals".
I haven't really paid any attention, but do posts on this site in addition to increasing the totals here, ALSO add to the total shown on the other site, or are there actually two separate "buckets"?

Speaking from the sheer beauty of nearly total ignorance, I think that currently there are 2 different post counts.

Personally (puttin' on my Jersey attitude here), I really could care less about titles and post counts and rankings. All it says is that you should be spending less time on the computer and more time building models.
What matters is content, the community, and what we contribute to the arena. I'm not here as often as I'd like to be, but I hope that what I contribute helps out my fellow modelers. Maybe JORGs think that a high post count means you're an authority. Personally, I think it means we like to talk!
And besides, Jim doesn't have a special title for me, I requested "El Capitan del Guapo" almost 3 years ago!!
F.I.I.G.M.O.,
Jeff
EDIT: You don't know what a JORG is?? It's a Junior Officer Requiring Guidance. It's a polite way of calling someone an FNG.
What's an FNG? It's a ... never mind. :-)

Awww come on Rip... let 'er rip...tell us what you REALLY want to say!!
There are forums I maintain over at FSM where the posts don't count towards your total...
We still have people (especially JORGs) who'll post up "he-he" or "nice" or a bunch of smileys just to run up the post count.
That defeats the purpose of a forum being an informational community. Then, it's simply another low-speed chat room. While there's nothing wrong with that, readers shouldn't have to wade through 4 tons of chaff to get the information they want.
I'm also not saying that always the case, I think it's a problem that all forums face, regardess of the subject matter.

Now, I KNOW that Dave qualifies as a FOG, and I'm REAL, REAL close behind! :-)
...My feelings lie with Jeff on this one, really, and to be honest with you, I don't spend alot of time posting in the forums...I DO read all of the posts, but I don't reply to as many as I could...I like to give my mates a hand when I can, and to reply to a post just to run your count up is totally preposterous...just not the ARMORAMA way...

Well I'm a plankowner of the USS Laboon so that's in keeping with naval tradition
BTW a JORG (pronounced george)is the junior Ensign on board usually signified by very large Ensign bars- the senior is known as the BULL.

OK, way too much TV moment:
This line leaves me with a picture of Bart Simpson posting 100 times:
I will not post for count.

To re-use the 'Jersey'-ism, I too could care less about how long or not someone has been here. Replying to posts just to boost up post counts never came up in this thread before now if I remember rightly - it's not something I personally do, but if someone wants to do so then again I don't mind provided what they post also adds something to the forum.
Hopefully you will agree that some of my posts here and on Armorama are also helpful and/or of value to other modellers.
I first posted in this thread because the rank system is not uniform over the different sites - I probably didn't make myself sufficiently clear on that. I don't really mind whether we have a system or not (although I agree with Rodger that it might encourage newer members to be more active on the forums). If we have one though it should be consistent across both Armorama and ModelShipwrights.
Finally, I may be over-reacting to this, but I don't particularly appreciate the JORG comments. Maybe they were supposed to be tongue-in-cheek but I suspect there was meant to be a barb in there too. I've spent over 16 years in the military (full time rather than reserves or what have you), and have done my fair share of ops, so I think I'm beyond the FNG stage now. Jeff and Gunny, don't know if either of you have ever been in uniform?
End of rant

Graham, take it easy mate! I can't speak for Jeff, but I find your posts most helpful, and indeed of value to the forums... and I never pointed any fingers at anyone in general...
That's one of the main problems with the written word in forums, as it often times is taken the wrong way, most often not the way it was generally intended to be expressed... Don't worry, be Happy!

Unfortunately, we're starting to get off topic here, folks, and quite frankly, in a direction that is not necessary...we're all a tight group over here, and this sort of stuff has no place in the forums...If there are further problems, they really should be dealt with by pm...
Thanks,
Mark

What I think would be cool is if we could have a rank system consistent with the seagoing theme and not have to carry our rank system over from Armorama. For instance I'm using the British Army OR rank on Armorama, and that's cool, but it seems a bit silly to be Pvt Blacker over here. I'd rather be Seaman Blacker or whatever. Can't I have a seagoing rank here and my reg one over on the A?

Hi Dave!
Good point, and good question, mate!
I do believe that for now Jim S. is working out the major bugs of our new home first, and will fine tune the site later on...I too would like to see a "joint rank system" developed between our new site systems, but honestly, I don't know how much of a pain in the butt something like this might be for our Commander in Chief...
For now, the current rank system is going to have to suffice, as Jim has earlier stated.
But like he also said, Stay Tuned, so I'm sure he has something in the works!~Gunny

Sure Mark, YOU'RE happy with the rank insignia, you've got naval rank. :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) (In case you can't tell my tounge is FIRMLY in my cheek so please don't take offense.) By the way, how in the world did somebody with the handle "Gunny" get CPO rank? Couldn't they come up with a Marine insignia for you?
Back on topic for just a moment. I know some people swear by the rank system, and some people swear AT it. To each his own. Personally I don't look at people's ranks, but I do look on how many posts they've posted, and when the enlisted, just to get a little idea who I'm dealing with. It's not going to make me think more, or less, of anybody it it's there first post, or their 5 thousandth post. I do like the insignia though, as it makes the site kind of fun.
