I don't think I've seen this here befor but apparently a fine lady went to her well earned reward yesterday.
The U.S.S. Oriskany was scheduled to be sunk yesterday off Florida for use as an artificial reef. I haven't yet found out is she was finally sunk or not, but if not it's only a matter ot time. We discussed this last night at my modeling club and I personally think that while it's a shame to lose such a fine ship, it's better that she be put to such a great use than to be cut up for razor blades and Toyotas.

Yes, they showed video of the sinking on the local news here. (Ch 12) Of course none of the reporters could correctly pronounce her name.

Sad to see a fine old ship with such a distinguished record go, but you're right. Better a warship's fate, than scrap.
The has been some talk that the CV60, USS Saratoga is also being planned for scrapping, and a group is trying to save here.
It seems to me that it's one thing to get rid of an Essex class, but totally another matter to get rid of a true "post war" carrier, even an oil fired one.

I knew that :-)
I may have gotten some stuff mixed up then, there was another carrier warfare Korean era flic made and I think that was the one I meant. I know it wasn't the Essex because of the fight bit with Micky Rooney because his girl fell in love with an "Essex man"

That movie was also the start of the World Famous Golden Dragons, VFA-192.
