Hi Fellow Shipmates

I have a pretty simple question. I have the chance to get this kit the 1/72 Revell U-Boat Type VII C/41 Atlantic Version. Is it a good kit and is it worth getting?

I already have the 1/72 Revell U-Boat Type VII C "Wolf Pack" awaiting a start. This appears to be a great kit and I can only assume the Atlantic version will be of the same high standard.

I love these U-Boats but I would love to get some second/third etc opinions on the kit itself and the benefit if any in having them both.

I would like to hear everyones comments/input.

Regards

Sean

Ahoy Sean,

If you like U-boats, the VII-C/41 is a must. It is in the standards
of a high quality kit and the price for its size is very good.

It will make a great companion to the VII-C originally released.
Also you may consider building it with the Vierling (Quad) AA.

I have found 2 sources so far for an AA Quad:

Hasegawa 1:72 scale 8 ton halftrack kit no:31114
Revell Germany soon to be released S-100 upgrade w/AA quad.

There are some corrections to be made to both kits, to
get them to be 100% accurate but they will build into fine
kits OOB... it all depends if you are building for the fun of
it or try to achieve the perfect u-boat. There is a huge
amount of after market parts that you can purchase to
accurize both of these kits.

Hope this helps,
Have a nice day and happy modelling!

Hey Sean!
Yeah, they're both great kits with a decent amount of accuracy for each of them, mate (although there are a few innacuracies, but I'm no longer a purist!). Each one will build up to a great rendtition of the full blown vessel, and both are quite fun to build!

Thanks Guys

Great advice much appreciated.

Graham LOL.

Ironically our house is on a concrete base with concrete block walls filled with concrete and therefore its design and structure is not unlike a U-Boat pen. In fact I describe it as "being built like a bunker" now I just got to fill it with U-Boats.

It already echoes with the sounds etc of the movie "Das Boot" which is frequently playing at our place.

LOL

Hi Crew

After my Dreadnoughts contribution was flattened (a long story see the Campaigns thread update) I was authorized to do some retail therapy to cheer me up so I invested in the U Boat.

I am glad I am not the only one - this must be the series / film more played at my home ever!
I was fortunate to tape the serie when it aired Portuguese TV (in 1990, I think) after that i saw and saw the episodes more times than I care to remember or count.
Than someone offered me the DVD, and I got the Director's Cut and when it was released the DVD series - I can say that it still is a pleasure to watch Das Boot

For me, it's Victory at Sea, Glenn Miller and Big Band music.

Shipmates,
I have to agree with Ken, Victory at Sea & GlennMiller is definitely the way to go !
And as for the Type VII/C41 - the kit looks great to me. Just not used to that humongous 1/72nd scale !!!! And also maybe Joe or some others might be able to help me. I am looking at doing the C41 with the Quad flak mount. Now starts the quandry......has anyone seen any photos of C41 boats with the Quad mount installed ? I have a photo of U-745 but that is a straight 7 type. Granted, it may not make that big a difference, but I would like to be historically accurate. I have a listing of all C41's from the U-boat site, so any help would really be appreciated. Thanks again, Bruce

Ahoy Bruce,
https://ssl.kundenserver.de/www.u-boot-shop.com/sess/utn;jsessionid=15448662511bc94/shopdata/0030_U-Boot+T=FCrme/images/1004-1_500x2510_500x2510.jpg

This is a 1:40 scale tower made as a replacement for the
Robbe RC u-boat. It the best reference shot I have come
across to date of the C/41 tower with the quad.
I have other photos of the real thing but being actual photos
taken 60 years ago, they are not so sharp...will scan and send.

Also take a look at this site...although in German...it has
great shots of various towers found on the Type C's.

Joe,
Thanks for the url on the photo - that helps a lot. I had heard previously that the quad mount was substantially different for the Navy from the Army mounts. It may be some work, but I can see where it will be worth it. Now I need to find a Boat number to match it up to.
Since I'm just starting my boat, there is no hurry. Thanks again for the help.

Hi Bruce,
If you look closely at the gun mount, it is in fact very
elevated on a pedestal. This was the navy configuration found on u-boats.
I will scan some pics and a drawing for you...will send
shortly...got to get to a scanner...mine is kaput!
If you would like to model a VII-C41...you could choose
one that I know of....U-377 and I have pics of this boat.
Hope this helps,
Talk to you soon

Joe,
Very interesting. Per the production list on U-Boat net, U-377 is not listed as a VII/C41. (Not that that site is the bible, just a good reference site.) I would really be interested in seeing the photos you have.
Needless to say, If I can be of any assistance to you, just let me know.
This may turn out to be an interesting project ! Thanks again, Bruce

Ahoy Bruce,
Now that' s a very interesting observation that you have made
about U-377...checked it out and in fact the u-boat net does
list it as a type VII-C.
My reference to this boat comes from the book by author
Jak P. Mallman Showell "U-boats under the Swastika"...
the author's father, Obermaschinist Jak Mallman was lost
on the boat's 13th operational tour in January 1944...how
curious that u-boat net does acknowledge this but lists
this boat as a type VII-C with no mention of its C /41 and
Turm IV configuration yet the photo at the bottom is of the
Turm IV config. with the flakvierling.
What a mystery...now you got me going!...must look into
this...
Joe

Joe,
Well, here we go ! I also have that book, and will have to check that out. But this isn't really new. I've seen several books mention the VII/C42 - one even had a color profile. Which is extremely interesting, considering contracts for the C42 were cancelled in order to concentrate on Type XXI production - with no C42 boats built. But any help is appreciated. Good thing I left plenty of time for research !

Hi Bruce,

OOOPs...my mistake! U-377 is in fact a Type VII-C. The TurmIV
modification and the Flakvierling in my photos threw me off.
Well, I now know a little more about u-boats! :-)
Have a nice day and happy modelling,
Joe

Joe,
No problem. Believe me, I wasn't trying to bust your chops. Over the last 50 years of research, I've learned how little I know about the U-Boat arm. Now that I have the "plan" of what I want to do, I can concentrate. I have the type of boat (VII/C41), type of mod (Turm IV, with Flak mount), I just need to find a picture of a boat that fits ! There were 91/92 C41 boats built, how many had the flak mount, and what were the hull numbers will be my next quest.
The Revell boats are just too good to pass up. Plus the Type VII has soooo many mods, one can go crazy ! For instance U-673 with the forward gun platform, or U-295 with 2 Bibers strapped down for special ops. Plenty to keep one busy......not to speak of out of display space !
Anything I can do to help out anyone - just give a yell.

Hi Bruce,
Beleive me...my chops are unbustable!
:-)
Well am glad that was all clarified...like I said now I know a
little more about u-boats...since we are on the subject of
research, can you help with any reference material or suggest a source for plans or photos of U-35 or the VIIs.?
I am in the process of backdating a type VII-B to the earlier
variant, the VII, sometimes erronously referred to as the VII-A.
Well you know this type had many differences. Any material
that clearly shows the stern tube and and fore deck views.
would be appreciated.
What do you know of the book: Vom original zum Modell on the
Type VII? Is it worth the investment?
Thanks and have a great day!
Joe

Joe,
OK then.....the '35 Boat. Well, first I assume you do know there is a separate web site dedicated to just the U-35, if not let me know, I'll get the URL for you.

As for photos and diagrams, I'll start digging. It will take a day or two to go through all this stuff. My "bible" as far as the boats are concerned is Rossler's book on the U-Boat - absolutely excellent.

I do have the vom original zum model on the type VIIC..along with several others. Although I neither speak nor read German, I consider them great reference books and well worth the money.

BTW.... I've seen your work on several sites and applaud your Boats - absolutely top notch !!
