Building the Revell 1/508 scale Long Beach, CGN-9, for a fellow that served on her during her first deployment who is undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer (and, so far, is doing well). Granted, I know the kit is hopelessly inaccurate, but the goal is to rough-cut it to something passable. I'm looking for references (ran the Google/Google images search) suitable for the Long Beach up until 1962, specifically the area behind the pagoda including the blockhouse on the aft deck. I would like to know radar, mast, and radio antenna types along with their descriptions and locations. While I'm certain no photoetch was made for the kit, I'm curious if anything out there could be used in a pinch, even if it's not to scale, for radars, masts, railings, and walkways. Anything from 1/700 to 1/350 may prove useful. The model is to represent the 1961-62 time frame, with ASROC launcher but sans 5 in guns.

Any other recommendations and sources would also be appreciated, as I rarely build ships and the types of references, paints, and aftermarket sets available are relatively unfamiliar to me.

Thank you!

Hello, mate, and Welcome to Models Shipwrights!

You've got a great project planned there, and I do believe you are correct in stating the availability of any A/M materials for this subject, Bro...I haven't seen any either...you need someone who has undertaken the same project before and can give you some pointers (which I haven't, mate...sorry!) but you have done the right thing and posted a question here, my friend, because there is a vast amount of knowledge and talent that lurks here in the waters of MSW...be patient and I'm sure that someone will lend you a hand!

I think that Long Beach kit qualifies as a rare kit. Haven't seen one in a decade or so. You might be able to get some 400 scale railings to put on her but I think any other detail would have to be scatched on.
