Ok guys,

Here is two cool web sites about the uboats in the Gulf of Mexico.

U-166

Deep Gulf Shipwrecks

The first one has several great photos of the U-166 wreck just off the coast of New Orleans, LA.

Cool enough for ya Gunny?

hey Kenny

thanks for the links.
the pics of u-166 are incredible. Hard to believe she's been down there for more than 60 years... if you look at the conning tower, the view from straight above, it isn't even that hard to imagine to see the crew on her decks, or to imagine seeing the wheel of the hatch slowly move...

If you have any more links or know any websites like the two you already posted, please share them with us.. It's like reading your first comic book when your 8 years old.. you simply can't stop after one page..

Very interesting links.. thanks!!!!

Hi Kenny

Great links thanks so much.

I love these types of rediscoveries and even better if its a U-Boat.

I think its great how it is so well documented on the website/s.

Regards

Interesting....the only U-boot sunk in the Gulf. I would have thought much differently. With all the shallow waters, white sand, etc I have always been under the impression that many more were sunk . Maybe the KM didn't put many in the gulf for that reason.

The thread got me doing some research and I found another cool link, this one concerning Merchant Ship losses in WW II.

It indicates that a total of 46 ships were attacked/lost in the Gulf of Mexico, almost all of them in 1942. Not sure exactly how many U-Boots were responsible, but virtually all losses were due to torpedo or shelling.

Thought you guys would like this one. Being from Louisiana and an amature historian, this story in near and dear to me. The 1942 Gulf Sea Frontier campaign was so successful it was called the second "happy time". There were 24 uboats in the Gulf with 18 sinking or damaging ships. On one occasion, a captain found his uboat heading up the Mississippi River! The crew were getting some fresh night air and enjoying the scenery. The captain, who was in his quarters, realized something wasn't right and asked for their position. He quickly reversed course and beat it out of there. Like on the east coast, the uboats had free reign until the War Department finally got them enough help with patrols. They flew blimps out of southeast LA and even flew patrols out of Lake Charles, LA, 15 minutes from my house. The unsung heroes were the Cajuns that knew the coast line like the back of their hand. They patroled the beaches. The guardian angles of the Gulf was the shrimp boat fleet. They were the quickest to respond to a sinking and pick up survivors. If you can, get Torpedoes in the Gulf. It gives a fairly accurate tail of what went on, except for U-166, which you guys have already learned.

Hey Gator,
Thanks for the history, Bro...
It's really amazing how much military history winds up to be right outside your backdoor sometimes, isn't it?

All it takes is a little research, and most people would be amazed at what they would find out about their surroundings!
