Hi, I have never built a ship (just armor and cars) but want to do something with a dazzle scheme. Do you have any suggestions on some inexpensive kits or really cool paint jobs?

I've seen one on a PT boat. Buy a 72nd scale Elco boat....PT 109) I 've seen some pictures, I believe in the squdron book. But I must ask ....are you insane ? :-) :-) :-)
Seriously though, this is an extremely tough undertaking. I hope you are a real good painter. I'ld start out and paint the entire boat white and then go from there with thin strips of masking tape.

If I remember correctly there is a photo in Al Ross' "Allied Coastal Forces" of a PT boat in an experimental dazzle scheme that will quite literally make you feel ill when you look at it! I'll take a scan and post it later today...

Well hello there, William!
To answer your question, mate, yes, there is a brand new kit "out there" with four dazzle paint schemes included in the plans, and you can read all about the kit in a review from the pages of MSW right HERE!
And if you have any other questions, don't be afraid to ask!
Keep Modeling!

Can't remember off the top of my head - I'll check for you tomorrow. You're not seriously going to try and paint that on a model are you? it would drive you mad!

That's the Elco PT boat. You can get the oldy Revell 72nd scale PT 109 for around $10. Italerie is releasing one in 35th scale real soon I think it'll run somewhere between $75 and $100. But I don't know for sure.

I will buy that kit, and do that camo, when and where did it serve?
Posted: Tuesday, August 29, 2006 - 04:15 AM UTC
The ELCO boats substituted a yellow green for the white. They found that the camo didn't work, so they painted over it. A squadron did deploy to the Med using the zebra camo, but they were using Higgins PT boats, not ELCOs

The boat in Graham's post is PT 170. I've uploaded a scan of the original ELCO drawing for this particular version of the Adaptor pattern (official name) to My Photos.
From an accuracy standpoint, this pattern would not be applicable to the Italeri kit. However, PT 596 and many of her sisters would have carried MS 31/20L, which comprised a series of swirling, hard-edged shapes in Ocean Green (5-OG), Navy Green (5-NG), and black, with Deck Green (20-G) decks.

Hey, thanks Al!
What a fantastic scheme...A few years back, before the bi-focals arrived, I would have loved the challenge of re-creating this one, would make for an excellent model, wouldn't it!? You know what, mates, this would be a show stopper for the upcoming PT-Boat Campaign, aye? ....

Hi William
The only thing I am going to tell you for now is: It can be done!
I have done it back in... 1996 or 97, in 1/72!
Currently it's in exhibition on our Modeling club (AMA - Almada's Modeling Association) permanent display.
Photos asap

Cool, did you use thin tape for masks? And would the Revell PT109 kit work? I can't wait to start!
Posted: Wednesday, August 30, 2006 - 03:30 AM UTC
Hi William
Yes, I used Tamiya Tape cut in half lenghtwize or one third for the hull, but I handbrushed all the lines for the superstucture parts (cabin, torpedo tubes, oerlikon etc)
And yes, I used the revell PT-109 model (at the time I was just amazed by the dazzle patern instead of accuracy).
The method is to paint the white parts, mask, paint the black (I used a very dark gray) and then paint the deck green.
As I said, I will post some photos asap, they will show better than my poor english

Fair enough considering it has almost (or already!!) 40 years old!
Some details could be added, like for instance the PE set WEM has for it

Hi All.
Im not a ship modeller but I do like a challenge and that PT boat looks like a lot of fun.Can anyone suggest a good kit to use for it?
I did a razzle dazzle Naval Sqn Sopwith Camel recently, which is the closest Ive ever got to building a ship.
Razzle Dazzle Camel
The trick to getting thin strips of masking tape is to tape two new scalpel blades together

Hi Nigel, welcome to the "salty side" of Kitmaker, mate!
If you really want to try this scheme out my friend, look for the 1/72 scale PT-109 by Revell Models. . .it's an old kit, not very accurate, but you can improve the accuracy with the addition of an A/M update kit, White Ensign Models has a good one to use for this scale, as well.
If you do decide to give it a go, please keep us updated over here, and who knows, maybe another shipwright will be born?

That zebra-striped camouflage scheme was officially called the Adaptor scheme. As designed, the darker panels used black stripes over 5-O Ocean Gray (the Free French cruiser GLOIRE was painted in the Adaptor scheme in a US yard). One thing to remember if you're going to tackle that one: the stripes were for the most part tapered--in the larger panels they would for instance be 6" wide at one end and 4" wide at the other end. You're going to have to be doing a lot of cutting of tapered pieces of masking tape....
And as for the use of the scheme, it was carried by operational Elco boats in combat in the Pacific, as well as by Higgins boats in the Med.
