This is the second release of this kit by Tamiya.  It does look to be a marked improvement over the original though.  This was the Japaneses weirdest class.  They started out life as light cruisers, were all converted into heavy crusiers.  At Midway the Mogami and Mikuma smashed into each other which left the Mogami a sitting duck.  The Mikuma was converted to a hybrid carrier like the Ise / Hyuga

Hey Steve, the Mogami was the one converted to a hybred.  I got the Tamiya kit.

Correct. Mikuma was sunk at Midway, Mogami was damaged and converted to a seaplane carrying cruiser. She looked somthing like Tone and Chikuma when finished.
