I need advice on how to paint the chains on my Sakura.

On the other ships I’ve been drybrushing them but on this one the decks detailed with some type of anti skid surface (I’m assuming thats what it is.) I know that if I drybrush it I’ll just end up painting the details as well. Any advice?

Also while I’m here the ship has rails (for a cart or something to move on.) on the deck. I’m assuming these would be black to?

Hi Jacob!
I wish that I had an easy answer for you, mate. . .depending on your circumstances, you may be able to use a brush on liquid mask. Ever use it before? You brush it on where you don't want to have paint, let it dry (doesn't take long), and then paint as usual. When your paint is dry, you peel off the mask. It might be the ticket to getting close to the chains laying on deck.
Here's a link to a really nice Sakura build, right Here.

Thanks Mark.
I’ve just bookmarked that link. Should be helpful when I come to doing the rigging.

Looking at the pictures I see they didn’t paint the chains. Don’t know if thats the correct way or if it was just overlooked but I may just leave mine go as well.

I noticed that too, Bro. . .I personally like to do away with the molded on links and replace 'em with the real thing. . .but if you decide to go this route and start scrapin', be prepared to re-scribe some deck details.

I wont be worrying about doing that with this one.

Of course I will be adding PE chains when I get to the 351 bet that kit has a smooth deck so it should be easier.
As for now I just want to get the painting done so I can start on the base and see how that works.

Really can’t wait to get this test ship out of the way so I can start the real project.

Hey Jacob,

Here's a little trick I use to get those fine details painted. I use felt tip archival markers. I can get them in various micro fine tips and they work great. Wal Mart and any craft store will have them. At Wally World, they're in the crafts section.

Here's a link - ZIG pens

Hi Jacob,

An ordinary lead pencil is good for worn metal, won't give you that rusted look but good for highlighting small details.

If you slip just rub it off

Cheers

I almost always go with black for my chains, on 350 scale I use real chain, anything else I generally use a sharpie black marker
