Hai,

My son is showing great interest in the classical history of Greece, Rome and Egypt. Because he is showing more and more interest in modelling I would like to get a model ship (ancient roman, greek or egyptian ship) for his 13th birthday.

Unfortunately, I know nothing on the subject and therefore I seek your input.

Could you please tell me if there are model ships around according to the above description which can be build by a bright 13 year old?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Ahoy, mate!

Welcome to Model Shipwrights!

Sailing ships of the days of yore, eh?
Well, the list could be quite extensive, but first a question or two. . .would you like a plastic/resin medium, or a natural wood kit? And, does your boy have any modeling experience? How much are you looking to spend, as well??

Hello Gunny

He has no experience whatsoever with modelling, the ship would be the start of what I hope to become a long modelling "career".

I have lots of experience with plastic, nothing with wood, and I guess that I will have to help a bit

I would also prefer a model of a series meaning that there are more models available of the same subject (ancient ships) in the same scale. When making a collection, I always found it annoying to have models of different scales making it impossible to use these together in a diorama or to simply compare their size.

But the main point is that he must have fun doing it. To give him an expensive masterpiece way above his abilities would probably only frustrate him and put him of.

OK, mate, here's my suggestion. . .
Since you, Dad, will be undoubtedly "helping" ( ) with this endeavor, and are looking for possibly some Diorama fodder, might I suggest the new release of, Zvezda Models kit #9030, The 1/72 Carthagenian Galley Ship, and while you are building this with your boy, you can think about the sea landing/battle diorama that you can create using Zvezda Models March release, 1/72 scale Carthagenian Cavalry, # 8031 (along with a bunch of OTHER cool 1/72 Medieval dio stuff!). . .might make for a very interesting history discussions, as well!
Cheers,
~Gunny

Zvezda makes 4 or 5 ancient sailing ships in 72nd scale including a Greek and Roman warship. You can get them easily through the mail order method. Both the Squadron shop and Great models carry them. But the shipping to Belgium may be a bit high

Lucky models out of China has the Roman ship for $15 US. Shipping to Europe from there is't too bad I think

If you look in the dockyard forum here you can see pictures of the built kit as one of our gus just built one. It's a beauty
