Ask about giant, aircraft carrying submarines of WWII and IJN submarines most often come to mind, but until 1943, the largest was the French built 'Surcouf'. Her history is clouded in controversy from her loyalty to the allied cause being questioned to her unconfirmed fate.
Surcouf was commissioned i May 1934. Named after the French privateer Robert Surcouf — she was the largest submarine ever built until surpassed by the first Japanese I-400-class submarine in 1943. Her short wartime career was marked with controversy and conspiracy theories (that she may have been loyal to the Vichy government, among them). She was classified as an "undersea cruiser" by sources of her time.

Caraktere publications has a new 3D LOS! portfolio dedicated to the French submarine. Printed on heavy paper, the portfolio includes detailed 3D renderings and scaled wired plans and measures 16+" by 11+" (420mm X 297mm).

It is available direct from the caraktere website for approximately $57.00 (US) plus shipping.
