The F120 Köln class of frigates were the first warships to be produced by Germany after the Second World War. The Frigate were 360 feet in length and topped out at just shy of 2800 tons.
From this class of ship sprang the Augsburg (F222). Launched in 1959, the Augsburg was regulated to the 2nd Escort Squadron for German and spent time in the Baltic, North Sea and Atlantic. One notable fact was that the Augsburg served as the German Navy's flagship for the state visit of King Olaf V of Norway at Kiel in 1973. From 1976 to 1986 the Augsburg would be involved in three collisions; one Polish ship, one British ship and oddly enough while in port (presumably dry-docked) she was struck by a Soviet tractor. The Augsburg served until she was decommissioned in 1988.
