In 1969 the Aurora Model company had done a single production run of a 1/93 scale model kit of the US Navy's experimental underwater habitat Sealab III. Now Atlantis Models is planning to reverse engineer this kit .
Written with info from various sources:
The third and finalSealab habitat design, Sealab III was the Sealab II habitat refurbished and placed at a depth (200+ meters) 3 times greater than when it was Sealab II. Situated on the ocean floor off San Clemente California in 1969, 5 teams of nine divers were scheduled to spend 12 days each in the habitat, testing new salvage techniques and conducting oceanographic and fishery studies as well as developing saturation diving techniques that would be used in covert submarine operations.
By most accounts, SeaLab ended in failure with the death of one of its participants. But in a little-known chapter now coming to light, the undersea work that began at SeaLab continued in secret and eventually helped yield major Cold War espionage successes. The book "Blind Man's Buff" makes mention of this when discussing the missions of the USS Halibut.
From Atlantis Models:
Up for Preorder and if enough are taken we will produce the kit. The Preorder time will last for 60 days. We will update the website weekly to inform the buyers of current kits purchased. By having the preorder on our site it will reduce third party fees and allow us to open the door to hobby distributors and retailers. The kit will be molded in yellow, Black and clear with detailed instructions and decals. It features over 150 pieces and detailed sea floor base.
Atlantis Model Company is hoping to get enough preorders to produce a reproduction of the 1/93 Scale US NAVY SEALAB III, consumers, distributors and retailers are welcome to place orders. Your credit card or Paypal account with be authorized and not charged until we receive enough orders to produce the model. This will be an exact reproduction of the original kit. If we receive enough orders the kit will ready to ship in roughly 6-8 months time.
This kit (AMC6003) comes boxed shrinkwrapped and complete with decals and instructions.
List price is $74.99 (US) plus shipping.
We hope to bring to market many classic kits via the Atlantis Web Pre-Order System.
Model kits will be packed 12 to a case.
Note: A 'bagged' kit of parts but no instructions is also listed in the pre-order link for $49.99 (US) plus shipping.
I've wanted this kit for decades. It occasionally shows up on ebay fetching prices in the hundreds of dollars. I've put a pre-order for this kit myself and should they get enough to go to production with it, I'll do a review of it her at MSW.
