Designed in the 1930s by the Swedish arms manufacturer AB Bofors, this 40mm gun was one of the most popular medium-weight anti-aircraft systems during World War II and used by both the Allied and Axis powers. These guns were on every US capital ship from destroyers to battleships, PT-Boats and submarines.
North Star has 5 kits in different versions of this gun in quad and double mounts. There are three quad mount versions and two doubles.

The first quad mount (No. NSA350137) has parts for 6 gun mounts of the USN 40 mm/56 Bofors with Mk-51 director consisting of 36 grey resin parts, 24 brass barrels and 96 metal photoetched parts. Listed for $18.50 (US) plus shipping.

The second (No. NSA350138) is like the first set but has shielding around the gun. It consists of the same number of resin and brass barrel parts as the first with 120 photoetched parts. Listed for $20.50 (US) plus shipping.

The third quad mount (No. NSA350145) is similar to the first but has a cover on the gun mount base that covers the works (a later version of the gun) seen on the first version. It also contains parts for 6 mounts that consist of 6 grey resin parts, 24 brass barrels and 96 metal photoetched parts. Listed for $18.50 (US) plus shipping.

The two double mounts also contain 6 gun mounts each consisting of 24 grey resin parts, 12 brass barrels and 96 metal photoetched parts. The first set (No. NSA350135) has the exposed machinery on the face on the gun mount while the other (No. NSA350136) has the cover over it. Both sets are listed for $15.50 (US) plus shipping.

The brass barrels are made from the Master-Model Company.

All sets are availabe direct from North Star Models.

Michael, these parts are stunning. That last picture of the turned brass 40mm barrel alongside a match... AWESOME!

Thanks, Si, but I wouldn't call it a review since I haven't actually seen them in person. I work off images I get from the vendors or what's on their sites. But I'm seriously considering these things for my Trumpeter Texas when I get it. Any Bofors experts out there who know when the versions with the covers over the pedestal works came in to use?

I wish North Star had posted pics of the actual built up model and not the CAD's, to see what they really look like. CAD's are often misleading. However, I have bought other North Star products and they are always very good. A product and price comparison between these and Alliance Modelworks would be interesting - although you can't beat the turned brass barrels of North Star!
