The latest from Orange Hobby's (also known as Orange Model) Blue Series line, a Newport Class Landing Ship Tank (LST). These ships were meant to replace the older LST's with the bow doors used in WWII.
20 ships were built from 1966 to 1972 with the last in service being decommissioned in 2002. The class had higher speeds and trimmer lines than the LSTs of World War II. The vessels have two huge derricks used to extend and retract a bow ramp. The 110-foot (34 m) ramp has a 75-ton capacity. The Newport class was the first amphibious ship to be fitted with an internal side propulsion unit located below the waterline near the bow. The bow thruster allows the bow to be pushed from side to side while the stern remains nearly stationary. They also had a stern gate that allowed them to launch amphibious assault vehicles and have matings with LCU craft.
