The Agosta class was designed to replace the Daphne class submarines in French naval service. The new design was larger than the Daphne and incorporated streamlining lessons from US experience with the Albacore hull form. Battery capacity was doubled over previous French submarines giving these boats very good underwater endurance. This submarine is a double-hulled design. The main motor can provide 4725hp for short periods, giving a speed of 20.5kts.
