Recruit
(Pronounced Re-crew-it)
(Pronounced Re-crew-it)
Sorry shipmates, I took a Sunday Routine yesterday, even had a Sunday Sundae. But today I am back at it, expanding your Naval knowledge.
A derogatory pronunciation used by Recruit Division Commanders. Commonly used as a reply to a recruit's mandatory greeting of enlisted personnel while at RTC Great Lakes. "Good Afternoon, Petty Officer." "Good Afternoon, Re-crew-it."
Recruit is a term that is not only used in boot camp. It filters its way down a little each step of a sailor’s way toward the fleet. Those who go from boot camp straight to apprenticeship training hear the word over and over again. This is mostly because AT is right next door to boot camp.
To me using recruit was not all that bad. However the other term we could be called was worse, seaman recruit. I hated that one. I was going into an engineering rate, so I was a fireman.
