Recruit

(Pronounced Re-crew-it)
  • navywordoftheday
Sorry shipmates, I took a Sunday Routine yesterday, even had a Sunday Sundae. But today I am back at it, expanding your Naval knowledge.

A derogatory pronunciation used by Recruit Division Commanders. Commonly used as a reply to a recruit's mandatory greeting of enlisted personnel while at RTC Great Lakes. "Good Afternoon, Petty Officer." "Good Afternoon, Re-crew-it."

Recruit is a term that is not only used in boot camp. It filters its way down a little each step of a sailor’s way toward the fleet. Those who go from boot camp straight to apprenticeship training hear the word over and over again. This is mostly because AT is right next door to boot camp.

To me using recruit was not all that bad. However the other term we could be called was worse, seaman recruit. I hated that one. I was going into an engineering rate, so I was a fireman.

How do you know a recruiter is lying? His lips are moving.... Reminds me of DCO school in Pensacola, the Gunnys had to tell us NOT to greet the "re-crew-its" or return their "Good Morning SIR!" salutes...

I forgot that prospective officers had Gunnys for their training. That had to be fun.

oh its worse than that.. we were Direct Commission Os, means we showed up in Pensacola with LT bars in place and clueless for TWO weeks of schooling. Just imagine a bunch of medical, nurse and medical service corps newbies attempting to form themselves up (or dont!). Gunny was losing his patience as we are attempting close order drills when a platoon of OCS re-crew-its marches by in good formation. He turns around, blasts them with obscenities and the usual "Gunny talk". Then he turns to us DCO officers, takes a deep breath and says to our clueless platoon leader "Sir, with all due respect, your facing manuevers suck". Then we broke for coffee break lol...

[/quote] I forgot some staff officers go direct as DCOs. That had to be funny. I remember our first few days at RTC Orlando we were a mess. I am so glad we had regular Navy guys as our CC’s.
