famous Quotes

I thought today I would cover some famous Naval quotes. They all are important to US Naval history and I just figured I would use them for a break. There are many more than I will list, but I am putting down some of my favorites.

“You may fire when ready Gridley,” Admiral Dewey to Captain Gridley at the start of the Battle of Manila Bay.

“Boys, don’t give up the ship,” Captain James Lawrence last words as he died.

“Damn the torpedoes. Full speed ahead,” Admiral Farragut at the battle of Mobile Bay.
Farragut could see the ships pulling back from his high perch, lashed to the rigging of his flagship the USS Hartford. "What's the trouble?" was shouted through a trumpet from the flagship to the USS Brooklyn. "Torpedoes!" was shouted back in reply. "Damn the torpedoes!" said Farragut, "Four bells. Captain Drayton, go ahead! Jouett, full speed!"

“Receiving friendly fire, returning same,” EN3 Fred Cook in Vietnam around 1969. He told me a story about patrolling the river near an ARVN base. They kept getting fired at thier boat every time they passed the ARVN Base. So the Lt. told him to return fire if they fired at them the nex ttime around. They fired, so fe did the next time past, yelling this as he did so.
