Leave
  • navywordoftheday
Vacation time for any person in the military. Every sailor gets the same amount of leave per month as every other one else. The only time this is different is when you are coming home from a foreign deployment or duty rotation, or when you are injured. In order to take leave you must fill out a request chit and have it signed by just about everyone in your chain of command.

Leave is your time away from work and you are allowed to let you hair grow and even grow a beard. However, when you come back off leave you had better get everything squared away.

Some leaves do not get counted against your total, such as convalescence leave, after injury. Basket leave does not count against your total, but is highly illegal and can get both parties in problems. This leave is when the personalman throws your leave papers in the trash when you return and they o not get counted.

During my time in leave was given at 2.5 days per month, or 30 days a year. Sailors could carry over 30 days so they could have a max of 60 days on the books. The only ones allowed more were those who were forward deployed, such as being in Japan. They were allowed 90 days total.

I didn't use a lot of leave when I was in, except the traditional 2 weeks after boot-camp, I rarely took leave. Got out with 60 days on the books, had to use at least a week while on my last cruise, and before I got out, so took a week, and headed from Genoa Italy (where the ship was), and went up to Switzerland for a week. Got back the day before we left Genoa, so never really got to see much of it, but Geneva was gorgeous, and they actually liked sailors. (probably because they didn't see to many!) I also took a week once when the ship was in Athens, had family living there, so really enjoyed Athens. (And no I'm not Greek, the OMeara clan was pretty much scattered around the planet through marriages back in those days, one cousin married to a Greek Minister or Pastor.
