Johnny Cash
  • navywordoftheday
He was known as the man in black and thus gives his name to the Navy’s winter working blue uniform. This uniform is very simple, Navy blue shirt, Navy blue pants, Navy blue tie, and a Navy blue belt. Everything looks black to me, but it is called Navy blue. Since then you have the appearance of wearing all black, the term Johnny Cash comes into play.

Our company commanders in boot camp hated the term. They told us if anyone used it in reference to that uniform that person would not see the light of day for the foreseeable future. The reasoning was simple, call things by their correct name, not matter how awkward they might be. One company kept calling this uniform Johnny Cash that during their final dress inspection when the Winter Working Blue was to be the uniform nobody knew what uniform it actually was. The company needless to say failed because they all wore the wrong uniform and the fall out began.

I actually liked this uniform better than any other. It was so much easier to keep clean and nice looking. The Summer working white uniform showed every little speck of dust. They also showed off your military creases or lack there of as well.

Most people did not like the winter working blues because of the tie. I cheated and got the clip on. For inspections I wore the correct tie, but the clip on was authorized.
