Binnacle List
  • navywordoftheday
This is another term for the sick list or sick in quarter’s list. It is not to be confused with a barnacle. The term comes from the binnacle which was a piece of equipment used on sailing ships. The binnacle housed the ships compass as well as Lord Nelson’s balls. Each morning the ships corpsman or doctor would post a note here for the captain to inform him of the health state of the crew.

Today this is called the sick list. I cannot ever remember hearing the term binnacle list, but that does not mean it is not used any longer. It is possible some salty old sea dog out there has used the term and will continue to do so. It is a same when an old term is dropped from use. It is so much more colorful than sick list.

Had MSW posted a binnacle list yesterday, I would have been on it. But, do not fear, I am back at duty today!!!

I actually told my boss to post my name on the binnacle. Of course I had to explain myself. You know how land lubbers can be at times.
