Fore-mast
  • navywordoftheday
Well, think you know why the fore mast is called the fore mast? On a three masted ship it is the first mast. But ships are rigged in many different ways and it is possible to have one or more masts before the fore mast. So to find the fore mast you must first find the main mast. Then the fore mast is directly in front of the main mast, or it is forward the main mast, or fore the main mast. Get it? See sailors really do want to make things easy on themselves.

It serves the same purpose as any other mast to hold the sails used fro propulsion. The real reason I chose this for today’s WOD is it was easy. But if I hadn’t told you how the fore mast got its name you would be totally lost.

It can be made of three different sections, Fore-mast lower, Fore topmast, Fore topgallant mast. I will cover the sections later on.
