Crows Nest
  • navywordoftheday
Alright before you read on, think of what this is and why it is named what it is named. Got it? Ok, first let me tell you how I thought the crows nest got its name. Since it is the top most section on a mast where a lookout was posted, I figured it got its name from a crow nest. The reasoning being a crow will normally nest in the highest tree around to afford the best overall view of their surroundings. However that is wrong.

The crows nest is a basket or hooped station on the tallest mast of a sailing ship for the lookout. It is said that ancient Vikings kept a cage of crows up on the mast, since a crow would always fly towards land. Releasing one while lost or surrounded by fog gave them a direction to steer.

Sometimes there is a one logical answer for things and then there is a second logical answer for things.
