Pax Britannica
  • navywordoftheday
Latin for “the British Peace” similar in meaning to pax Romana.

The Peace of Britain lasted from 1815-1895(1905). These are the years which Britain ruled the world’s oceans and helped to spread the Empire.

During this time frame Europe was relatively free from war. The British Empire expanded and the British Navy ruled the seas, thus controlling commerce. Some other benefits caused by the power of the British navy was the spread of the English language, spread of the imperial system of measure, and rules for commodity markets based on English common law.
