USS Ranger
Here we have another name carried down over the years in the US Navy. The first Ranger was actually in the Continental Navy. She along with Independence received a salute from France for the first time. She was captured in 1780. Next we had two different Rangers in 1814, one was an ocean going ship sold in 1816, and the second operated on Lake Ontario she was sold in 1821.

The Navy was without a Ranger until 1876 when it commissioned an iron vessel which served until being broken up in 1940. Another ranger was a steel yacht commissioned in 1917. She later severed the Department of

Commerce before being returned to the Navy in 1931. Then we have two Rangers, neither of which was ever finished. They were CC4 and CC5, both Lexington Class Battle cruisers. CC-5 was laid down as the USS Ranger, but had her name changed to Constitution.

Next we come to the USS Ranger, CV-4. The nations first purpose built keel up aircraft carrier. She operated almost all completely in the Atlantic Theater of Operations during World War II. She was sold fro scrap in 1947.

The final Ranger was CV-61. She was the third of four Forestall class carries to be built. She was decommissioned in 1993 and is currently awaiting her fate. There is currently a move to have her saved for a museum, however it does appear she will be heading to the scrappers.
