Introduction

With the release of the German Submarine TYPE IX C/40 (U190) in 1/72nd scale by Revell of Germany, they have also released a set of 1/72nd scale German Navy Crew WW2 to accompany that model and others in the same scale.

This offering from Revell of Germany is supplied in an end opening box and contains 2 blue vinyl sprues.

Review

The figures in this offering from Revell of Germany are moulded from vinyl plastic as opposed to the kit plastic we are more familiar with, the result of this is that the detail is not as crisp as it could have been otherwise. The detail is quite soft, but in this scale it should pass average inspection when painted and will add to the look of a finished 1/72nd scale vessel.

Revell of Germany has supplied figures in 14 different stances and these will allow for a crew to be depicted at inspection, at alert and in action. The figures are suitable for both submarines and ships in 1/72nd scale. Being vinyl rather than the more usual plastic these figures will need extra care when painting, such as undercoating with high quality paint. They will also be harder to clean up as they will have to have seam lines cut away rather than scrapped.

Conclusion

These figures will offer an improvement to 1/72nd scale vessels as figures always add scale to a finish model and give it life. I wish they had not been moulded in vinyl plastic, but such is life as something is better than nothing and £7.45 is a reasonable price for what you get.

I have been building model kits since the early 70’s starting with Airfix kits of mostly aircraft, then progressing to the point I am at now building predominantly armour kits from all countries and time periods. Living in the middle of Salisbury plain since the 70’s, I have had lots of opportunitie...

This set can provide more figures and poses with reasonable detail than smaller sets of resin figures. A worthy set. I have had success with priming vinyl and soft plastic models with products like Rustoleum Plastic paint.

Just wondering...so many companies produce soft plastic figures since the early '60's (Airfix). Is there any reason for this? Is soft plastic so much more cheaper or easier to produce than styrene? Imagine trying to build a kit made of soft plastic!

I've often thought it might gave been due to moulding problems in the early days of plastic modelling and to keep down costs. Low price, bright colours and durability were obviously more attractive to kids looking to buy a box model soldiers back in the day. Unfortunately the kit makers are still in that mindset regarding1/72 figures even though the modeller has grown up and wants a better product. That aside, I have a set ready to crew an S-Boat and they are very nicely done.
