The Radar Etch Set
This set from Lion Roar is a comprehensive set of radars for WWII Royal Navy ships. Radar technology evolved quickly during WWII and there seemed to be a bewildering number of different sizes and types for a variety of purposes. You will need to do your own research to determine which radars are appropriate for your particular ship project and where they should be mounted.
The assembly directions consist of basic diagrams that show where to fold or bend the parts and how the various bits and pieces go together. Each of the different radars is labeled with both its designation and its purpose which will make it much easier when doing your research to determine which radars are appropriate for your build.
The parts are very delicate so use caution when removing them from the frets. I would recommend the use of a photo etch bending tool and perhaps an optivisor to minimize the chance of folding the intricate parts incorrectly.
The radar types in this set: • Type 281 Long Range Air Warning • Type 285 High Angle Gunnery • Type 279 Long Range Air Warning • Type 282 Close Range POM POM Director • Type 271 Surface Search Radar • Type 293 Air Warning Target Indicator • Type 284 Low Angle Gunner Radar • Type 283 High Angle Barrage Director • Type 274 Low Angel Gunnery • Type GA285 Range Finder Director • Type 286 Surface Warning Antenna • Type 290/291 Air Warning • Type 243 IFF • ECM • Type 277P • MF/DF
I was able to find pictures and diagrams for some of these radar types, but not all of them. For those that I was able to find, the radars in the set certainly look the part.
Conclusion
Often times in plastic ship kits the radars are either represented by simplified blobs of plastic or they are omitted altogether. This set from LionRoar will allow you rectify that situation and will add much needed detail and interest to your 1/700 Royal Navy builds.
