Modelling U-625

Conning Tower – Armament

In order to do justice to the increased armament on U-625, I had to draw on a few sources.

37mm Cannon (lower verandah)
I cannibalized a Revell 1:72 S-100 Schnellboot kit for its 37mm cannon, added a turned brass barrel from Steve Nuttall’s Model Barrels, lots of PE details from the Eduard PE set for the S-100 boat, and scratchbuilt the aiming optics from styrene. The cannon was painted the same grey as the upper hull (Gunze-Sangyo H324) and the brass barrel was painted with Modelmaster Metalizer #1423 Gunmetal.

Twin-barrel 20mm Guns (upper gun platform)
Many of the gun mounting pieces for the two twin-barrel 20mm guns came from the Nautilus kit, but I replaced the mounting posts with thin brass tube. Brass gun barrels came from Steve Nuttall’s Model Barrels, and other brass details came from WEM and Eduard PE sets. After test-fitting PE shoulder braces, I settled on resin shoulder braces instead (from the Nautilus set), since the resin shoulder braces have much better shape and dimension than the thin PE counterparts. The gun mounts/platforms were painted with the same grey as the upper hull (Gunze-Sangyo H324), the guns themselves were painted with Modelmaster Metalizer #1423 Gunmetal, and the mounting posts were painted Alclad Stainless Steel.
