The Prince of Wales

The Prince of Wales

introduction. . .

This was an entry in support of the inaugural Naval Group Build held in Kuala Lumpur by the Selangor and Federal Territory Plastic Modeling Society (SFTPMS) of Malaysia. As the Prince of Wales (POW) now rests off the coast of the peninsular of Malaysia in the South China Sea, I thought it apt to pay tribute to the service men who served so valiantly on her decks.

This 20 odd year old kit from Tamiya is still a relatively sound kit and was upgraded with the excellent White Ensign Model PE set ( despite its rather lacking instruction sheets) armed with the BS series technical booklet with some rare photos, the building proceeded with the major subassemblies of the superstructure and the first PE addition to the pom-poms. With around 18 PE pieces to each pom-pom this took a few evenings but was well worth the patience.

Those with a little more enthusiasm can of course add further tubing to the pom-poms to give it its rather complicated look but I decided to not take my first attempt at ship building too far.

All fired up with the beauty of the pom-poms, the cranes were the next ‘target’ and this part really came alive and is worth every penny spent on the PE set

AHHH WEM brass. THey do love their multiple itty bitty brass piece put togethers. Thank God for Gator glue now. I might start tackling more of those. Just got so tired of superglue sticking the parts to me rather than the piece. Great camo job on the POW. Certainly one of the more challenging ones ever done on a ship (Not countng those zebra ones)

Thank you all for your generous comments. It was a rather fun built despite the itty bitty parts and the hard fact that certain parts of your body is not what it used to be..( the eyes, guys). Its funny how after doing one ship, you suddenly end up with another 5 in your stash waiting for the spare 2.5 years to complete them!
