Scratchbuilding A New Deck for IJN Kaga

Step 2…

Next, I removed the kit’s elevator pieces from the fret. Since I would just sand these and use these on my new deck I lined them up as best as I could on the two sections and drew an outline around each. I then proceeded to use the metal ruler and cut the straight lines just inside the outline of the actual elevator. I then matched up the size of the rounded corners of the elevator with my hole punch set and punched out the corners of the area by matching up the cut straight lines. With the piece removed, I then proceeded to file and test fit the elevator pieces often and make corrections. In the end, I got the elevator to fit snuggly yet be level with the top of the deck. I carefully measured the kit position, marked the styrene and cut the windscreen block on the first section. I made it a bit larger than the kit’s to accommodate the photoetch I would be using. I also measured the floodlight positions on the last section around the elevator and used the correct size hole punch to make the holes.

I used the Evergreen N scale freight car siding for my 350 scale Yamato conversion. Good stuff though it might be a tad to wide to accuratly show planking in 700 scale still it beats trying to scribe all that.

Hi Anthony Very good SBS of this major scratchbuilt, even if only the IJN Kaga deck I think you have done a very good job, very clever in splitting it in sections (avoiding terrible and always problematic masking) and I am going to use the drain tip for my IJN Unyo built/scratchbuilt project. It makes a convincing drain and it doesn't get so fragile as the PE parts! Looking forward to see the full IJN Kaga Congratulations! Rui

Wonderful work. I am especially impressed with the gold-almond wash for the wooden deck sections. --Karl
