1⁄700Scratchbuilding A New Deck for IJN Kaga
Step 5…
I like to paint the wood portions of my deck first. Other’s methods might get better results, I like to paint my wood decks this way as it is fast and fairly realistic. Most IJN ship decks were made from a wood called Teak. The wood looks a lot like pine with more of a golden yellow color to it. I washed the styrene in water and patted the pieces dry with a paper towel. I then painted several thin coats of the Almond color directly over the white styrene. After the last coat had dried several hours, I began marking the deck with the colored pencils. I chose to not make any lines longer than ½ inch. After the lines were drawn I mixed up a tan-gold color with the three craft store acrylics, diluted it with water and ran the wash over the deck with a stiff paint brush. The wash reacts with the water color pencils and helps blend them with the deck. The wash was dry in a few minutes and I then sprayed a quick, very light swipe of the Almond color to blend the deck even more. I was satisfied with the results and brushed the Kure gray mix over the metal areas I created with raised primer.
