MosquitoCon2006
On April 8th, 2006 Pvt Parts (John Fortier) and Grumpyoldman (Dave O'Meara) ventured to the annual IPMS show in Wayne New Jersey. Dubbed as MosquitoCon2006, they weathered rain, and chilly temperatures, logging through puddles to arrive at the show.

A good time was had by all, the "Vendors from Hell" were doing their usual brisk business, arm loads of kits were leaving. The 50-50 winner sure seemed happy, as did the winners of the day long raffles and door prizes. The winner of the Iwata air brush appeared to be rather upbeat and cheerful.

As usual, the models on display were outstanding. This year the top honors went to a beautiful ship model. Congratulations to Dan Kaplan, who's 1/700 IJN Light Cruiser Noshiro has won the Bill Marshall Memorial Award for Best Ship and the Norm Kennedy Memorial Award for Judges Best in Show!!

Dan's model was totally amazing. It certainly was nice to see a ship model get the top honors.

About Dave O'Meara (Grumpyoldman)

I'm rewriting this in a much more humoristic way, to help over inflate my ego, and place my self on a pedestal, because I don't have a life, and plastic models are the only thing I live for. I plead guilty as charged to excessive babble, light hearted humor, and continued encouragement to youngsters...

Thanks for sharing GOM. Looks like a great show. I agree with Gunny about a ship being BIS. The shows I've been to lately the attitude is kind of, "ships, oh yeah, those floaty things, they're somewhere over by the back door."

I guess that that mentality is already changing! Non-ship modelers are starting to SEE and LOOK at ship models better, specially those 1/700 models packed with PE and turned brass barrels and rigging and weathering and little persons and.... :-) The thing is, since they are so small, people tend to pass them and don't give a second look (their mistake, their loss!!!!) This will change soon :-) Skipper

This is the second year in a row that a ship has taken "Best in Show" at MosquitoCon. Last year was Gary Kingzett's amazing 1/144th scale USS New Jersey BB-16. For any of you in the Northeastern/Mid-Atlantic US, try and stop by and visit us next year!

And Pvt Parts and myself would drive over the Newark to pick you up, and drive you there, and back, then a great meal at one of the local Portuguese restaurants in Newark. Sounds like a winning idea. And of course at the show you'll get to meet Martin, and Jeff, and quite a few other members..... and we would all tell favororite Dave Stack, and "Joe the Animal" stories..... :-) Sounds like a plan to me......

our cars don't rust here in Texas, we sorta wear them out by smacking each other. Combat driving in the DFW area. We have so many (of the people that Congress is screaming about right now) in the area that can't read. speak, nor understand English it's just flat scary on the roads
