hi guys , here's my latest project. my entry for the small craft campaign. italeri's PT boat. as soon as i got my kit..i started mine immediately. all other project are temporarily on hold. it's so big and compared to other 1/35 scale craft..it's twice the size of the LCT(almost)! here are some WIP pictures....

the bridge, tower, torpedoes and other armaments..

close-up of bofors, torpedoes and MGs..

upper and lower hull are of simple construction. the kit provided screws to attach them. and any optional aftermarket parts can be easily installed. like engines parts and extra interior details.

Shot with Canon DIGITAL IXUS i at 2007-07-11

just one nitpick..italeri didn't mold 'ghost'lines on the lowerhull for painting. comments and suggestions are welcome.

Great start Ed.
A couple suggestions:
1. Do NOT use the kits color guide. The colors are all wrong.
2. I used a laser level to show the waterline and then drew it in so i could mask it.
3. The decals are wrong. Archer makes a better set that corrects the number shadow lines.
4. Use eduard 50 cal ammo belts. The kit items are a PITA.
5. Do not use the kit's torpedo retaining wires. They are too stiff and will break off the eye bolts. Use string.
6. The flag ropes on each side of the mast are totally wrong-way too big. Replace with thread or stretched sprue.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

Ed

Comments, coments, comments

1. The more I see it, the more I am beginning to want it. It just is to big I have to keep telling myself and this from a guy who thinks 350 is just right (all those 3 footer kits).

2. You sure like Shermans

3. You have a lot of wasted space in those cabinets. I think I would add a shelf in each of the sections. That way you caould double your space and leave the top areas free for when you build BIG kits like a DOra, BR52, Leopold, or some really fine 350 scale Battleships or Aircraft carriers

hi and thanks guys for the kind words and comments. the PT boat is doing fine.but it will take a little while..this is one of the biggest i've build on 1/35 scale series.. except for the 1/32 planes which needed extra attention too. the modelroom used to be a storageroom in the attic. we fixed the larger are for the models and the smaller area for the storage. on a small corner i have my work table. i also bring my kit to the office and work on it during vacant time. this one have to stay in house.

thanks ed c. very much appreciated on your reference featured kit. lots of things to consider. i'm doing research on PT boats stationed here in the phils. few stories about them. sadly to say..they were decommissioned here in samar. branded as expendable equipment and now museum are restoring the few remaining ship existing. love the ammo belt unfortunately our local LHS doesnt carry aftermarket items. we buy them aboard or at the internet. PITA! got that..thats something new for my list. thanks for the tip.

hi vulcan, the boats on my shelve are vietnam boat, PIBBER and LSSC. the shelves i got from our old stockroom in the 'jeepney' shop. i like them spacious for easy access on the kits. next time i'll post more pictures on my modelroom.

hi everyone, more pictures on my WIProgress! testing the colors needed for the boat. started with the armaments and torpedos. deck and lower hull will follow...

thanks guys for the kind words. more WIP pictures..i've installed the clear plastic and PE grilles on the deck..it's not easy..i pre painted the grilles before putting them all together. the grilles and plastic are fewer than the slots on the deck..depends maybe on your PT Boat's configuration.

i've used no.16 automotive wire copper for the torpedo racks. bull's eye on the rack can break easy and the wire provided by italeri is much thicker for the holes.

MMmmHmmm, looking F.I.N.E. fine, mate!

You're doing a wonderful job on this Elco, Ed, this will make for a very good MOD feature!

have you been documenting the build with text as you go? You could even put together a very informative build feature article, that would be very helpful to other modelers here at MSW...whaddaya say?

Your model looks great Ed -- can't wait to see the finished product. While doing any research on the build did you by any chance come across a website that had a step-by-step guide with full text and photos? I had been using the site for my build and something happened tro my computer, causing me to lose the link.

Thanks and good luck with the project.

hi brian, and thanks guys. brian, you can check the guys at the dockyard section..go to discussion group under military small craft..there you can find anything about elco boat. i think ducati650 and the other guys are working on their PT Boats..some have nice links for references. i remember there's this one guys who documented his works..he's from italy i guess..he's one of the first who've got the first series of the PT Boat. i forgot his link. you can look in the dockyard section. have fun modelling and thanks again.

hi mark(gunny)..well..i'll try..thanks for the comments.. right now i'm working on the boat in a slow phase. even PM ducati650 for assistance.. . i'm having trouble with the pale green..few photos of the actual boat is on the internet. i'll post some pictures next time.

hi everyone, thanks guys for the nice words and comments. have fun modelling and thanks again.

hi and thanks pieter and ron, i 've used black as the primary coat for the torpedos and drybrushed it with mettalic gold and mettalic silver. the brushing also buffs the surface and should be in one direction. more progress pictures...

i'm planning to put figures on the boat. reconstruction of the figures will take alot of time surely..and yes also the uniforms..i got alot on my spare box. tank commanders and humvee drivers.

Shot with Canon DIGITAL IXUS i at 2007-08-11

i've painted the camouflage on the lower hull. not satisfied with the results...i've tried to retouch the colors and end up handpainting them. to neutralize the pale green..i've sprayed it with flat green and flat blue to cover the 'undesireable' area. the first color was dark yellow mixed with green.

and after...

Shot with Canon DIGITAL IXUS i at 2007-08-11

Shot with Canon DIGITAL IXUS i at 2007-08-11

the ammunitionbelt seem to be okay..it needed more attention to bring out the detail. the kit provided belts good for the MG attachment , not enough to fill the tray located both sides of the turret. as recommended the eduard ammobelt is a better choice.

Shot with Canon DIGITAL IXUS i at 2007-08-11

Shot with Canon DIGITAL IXUS i at 2007-08-11

i've replaced the cables on the tower with stretched sprue..looks okay to me. the original ones were out of scale.

Shot with Canon DIGITAL IXUS i at 2007-08-11

i've cutted this part to make space for the deck house. its an elevated step or box going to the bridge..portside of the boat..part 31D.

comments and suggestions are welcome. thanks again and have fun modelling.
