Time for another update, at the top of the pic i have done the main assembly on the bowspirit and jibboom this will be half stained and painted black when finished, below it you can see a few of the wood fittings i made from scratch out of walnut i think they are called open and closed hearts, last at at the bottom is the gun with the new handle i cut off the white metal handle and replaced it with brass wire and painted it to match the gun i think it looks more to scale this way.

Hi Rob,
Like it, very nice work.
You're right, the gun handle looks much better than the original.
What paints do you use on your wooden kits? This sort of thing is all new to me

 Catch you later

Thanks Vic good to hear from you. I used model shipways acrylic paint on all the wood parts, i really like the paint though it does have to be thinned alot when dry it leaves a nice smooth grain finish and they have all the proper colors for ship modeling.

Hi Rob
So far I've only managed to glue three pieces of wood together,

I just got a modeling room for myself where I could spread out enough to do it when we decided to get new carpets for a couple of bedrooms. So much cr@p got put in my room I can hardly get in the now

Hope to get some done soon though.
All the best

Hi guys it's way past time for an update on this build, as you can see from the pics the Sultana has gone through a few changes and a lot has been added to her lots of rigging which i really love to do and a few other details on deck which has become very crowded. i will try my best to finish her up in 2009 because i have several others ready to start. All comments welcome.

Thanks Dade, yes you are correct it has been a long time since the last update i guess i got a little burnt out on the build so i put it a side so i wouldn't mess it up, but i am now back at it and i am committed to finish it in 2009 i hope with in a few months. I still have work to do on her like the rat lines, 3 more spars and a little more rigging and a few small details, well back to work.

There's nothing that can compare to a well-made full rigged ship model.

Thanks Karl, i really like the 4 and 5 foot models they are really impressive but they cost to much and it's hard to find space for them, this model is only 18 inches long.

Hi Robert!

I have a fondness for the Age of Fighting Sail myself. To save money, I have found that plastic sailing ship kits are surprisingly adaptable into other vessels from the era. For example, I was able to convert a pair of classic Heller Victory kits (back when they went for under 100USD each) into recognizable semblages of the Bonhomme Richard and Serapis. The Revell Constitution can be shortened, narrowed, and altered into other frigates from the Napoleonic era.
As for size, even the Lindberg 'pirate' ship models can be gems in the smaller scale. So, take a look at the plastic kits. With research and imagination, they can yield more than the topic ship.

I agree Karl some of the smaller plastic sailing ship kits would make for a good build or conversion, that Victory kit looks good but at about $240.00 these days i would rather build a wooden ship for the same price. I have several others in my stash that range in size of 18 inches like the Sultana to almost 36 inches that larger size for me is still workable for display and storage while being built. After the Sultana is finished i will start another build of something a little larger, i may ask all the guys here to vote on one of several ships i have and see what they would like to be built that should prove very interesting.

You're right about the problem with the current price for the Victory. I've even scoured eBay for built or distressed kits to save money.

Time for another update, just a few pics of the added details like all four spars and the last 2 booms with most of their rigging. I Have now added all of the major parts and details, i still need to add a few small details and about a dozen pieces of running rigging line and than some touch-up painting, finishing and final pics, as always any and all comments welcome.
