Hi Kenny, I've just signed up for this and know what I would like to build but unless one comes out (Flying Dutchman 'ghostly type'- Pirates of the Caribbean) I will have to find something else.

Ciao
Luciano

Sounds good Luciano.

Hi
Tempted with the Pink Submarine ( I hate Pink so will give the kids a laugh). I think it was from the film Operation Petticoat.
Also as I'm not usually into building boats what type of sub is it & who make a kit of the type of sub portrade in the film.
I want something easy as I'm still doing My PT Boat.

Hey Shaun,

I plan on using Trumpeter's 1/144 late war Gato to do my USS Sea Tiger.

Cheers... I was also thinking of the pink sub as well as the PoC ship, as I will build them with my daughter... here is the info I gathered for the type of "sub" used in the movie Operation Petticoat; basically, Balao class late ww2:
--
MOVIE INFO: USS Balao SS285 was painted pink and was used for exterior shots in and around Key West. USS Archerfish SS311 wore the standard colors of gray and black, and was used for interior and exterior shots in and around Key West. USS Queenfish SS393 was used in opening and closing scenes, and was used for the "at sea" shots filmed in and around San Diego
--

Few interesting tid bits about the service of the subs involved in the movie:

USS Balao (SS-285, later AGSS-285), 1943-1963
USS Balao, first of a large class of 1526-ton submarines, was built at the Portsmouth Navy Yard, Kittery, Maine. She was commissioned in early February 1943 and worked up at New London, Connecticut, before deploying to the Pacific to begin operations against the Japanese….She made a South American cruise in January-March 1957 to participate in exercises with local navies, and in 1959 played a "starring role" as the motion picture "Operation Petticoat"'s pink submarine

USS Archer-Fish (SS-311) was laid down on 22 January 1943 by the Portsmouth Navy Yard. She was launched on 28 May 1943….On the evening of 28 November, Archer-Fish sighted a Japanese aircraft carrier, with four escorts, leaving Tokyo Bay. It required a six hour surface pursuit to get into attack position, at which time Archer-Fish submerged to attack. All six bow tubes were fired, with two hits seen and four more heard at the proper time. Enright estimated the target to be a Hayataka class carrier of about 28,000 tons, and was credited with that tonnage, as it was clear that the carrier had sunk….In fact, the victim of Archer-Fish's attack was the brand new Shinano, arguably the first true "super-carrier" ever built, and at 59,900 tons (standard displacement) also the largest target ever sunk by a submarine (or, quite possibly, by anything). Shinano had been laid down as a third Yamato class battleship, but converted to an aircraft carier during construction

USS Queenfish (SS393)…. Submarine warfare had already reached a fever pitch in the Pacific when the BALAO-class QUEENFISH (SS393) was launched at the Portsmouth Navy Yard in July 1943…Although the first QUEENFISH patrol was not unusual from the wolf pack spect, it was one of the most successful, showing what could be done by well-coordinated packs, acting aggressively in Luzon Strait. The two packs accounted for 13 ships of more than 89,000 tons….What occurred that night of 1 April, 1945 has been the subject of dozens of articles in magazines and journals and of entire chapters in several books. QUEENFISH sank a lighted, marked Japanese ship granted U.S. safe conduct to carry supplies for Allied prisoners of war. A tragic combination of circumstances and errors engulfed QUEENFISH and her skipper: missed communications, unclear messages, near-zero visibility, concern for counter-attacking destroyers, perfect accuracy with four radar-aimed torpedoes, etc.. AWA MARU sank in a couple of minutes. When the one survivor picked up by QUEENFISH told his story, Loughlin immediately reported to COMSUBPAC, CINCPACFLT and CNO…. QUEENFISH was ordered into port; CDR. Loughlin was relieved of command, tried by court-martial and convicted of one of the three charges, negligence in obeying orders. After the war, it was confirmed that AWA MARU was loaded with munitions and contraband. Loughlin survived to continue an illustrious career that led to flag rank. QUEENFISH resumed the war.

--
yankee modelworks (YM35062) has a balao class, a tad expensive to "spend" turning it pink.. am I not a sub expert, not sure how easy/hard would it be to modify a Gato to a Balao... at first glance, they are the same external dimensions, most advances/changes where internal and structural... will have to look at deck armament for differences.. hope this helps!

That's a cool kit. I have it in the stash. To get the cool pattern on the hull, I would try painting a lighter blue first and then lay stretched out surgical gauze on the model and paint your darker blue. Should give you that shimmering water look.

Funny you should mention that. I've been debating on how to do that. I even contemplated doing the the dark blue with a mottled gray, but then after looking at some photos of other models and from the show, that idea was 86'd I like that Idea Ken! I think I'm going to try it old on an old cannibalized sub I have and see how it looks. What do you think in regards to the blue? Intermediate blue and dark sea blue?

Bruce,

There was a discussion recently in a Sci Fi modeling forum (of all places) about PT Boats and the PT-73 from McHale's Navy. It turns out the actual boat used in the series was a British Vosper torpedo boat. The Vosper is available by Airfix in 1/72.

For my self, I'll be trying to get hold of an old Nautilus kit for doing the Tigerfish from 'Ice Station Zebra'. My preliminary search has revealed that the novel's version of the sub (named Dolphin) was more likely a Skipjack or Permit class sub. Since this 'Hollywood' I'll go with the screen version.

I also was thinking of a PT boat from 'They Were Expendable' or maybe 'In Harm's Way'. I have a Revell 1/72 Gato and the smaller Balao so I may do either the Cary Grant's Copperfin from 'Destination Tokyo' or Clark Gable's Nerka from 'Run Silent, Run Deep'.

Actually, Trumpeter's early war Gato would be perfect for the Copperfin.

I don't know what the sail and deck gun configuration for the Copperfin, is off hand. So I take it the Trumpeter kit is more close to that configuration than the Revell Gato kit?

Looks like the Trumpeter kit is better out of the box. I found this image of the Copperfin from the movie, for those thinking using her for their subject.

the model is made for after the Gulf War.I think it is close enough.

That will work Bruce. Another good one is to do an Ohio class sub as the Alabama from "Crimson Tide" with Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman.

Hello
My Submarine (pink as in operation petticoat) has arrived ,now to find some reference pic's . It's an old Revell/ Monogram 1/220 U.S.S Lionfish .
Also think that I might redo an old Tamiya 1/35th scale Pibber patrol boat that's been sitting on the shelf made but unfinnished for some time now into the one from the Appocolypse Now film ( if allowed).

The lionfish, my friend not a problem, BUT.....................

Our campaign protocol usually adheres to a policy of only unbuilt models being allowed (just to be fair to all entrants)...........but the campaign leader has the final say in this matter, mate!

Hi Gunny
I've also got an unbuilt 1 in the loft of the pibber so I'll see if I can find it .
Might only have time for the sub anyway as I'm still doing the diorama for the Pt174 .

Hey Shaun. Gunny is correct. The model has to be unbuilt for it to be an entry.

I got the subject of my build for Christmas. Renee got me the 1/72 Revell Gato. So, I'll be doing the USS Thunderfish from "Operation Pacific" staring John Wayne and Ward Bond.

Just got a Revell 'History Makers' Nautilus kit I plan to use for the Tigerfish.

Nautilus Models is planning on an early fair water/conning tower for the Revell 1/72 Gato. If that comes out in time for this year, I may also use that for the Copperfin.

Here's a link to the Steel Navy forums to see what's in the works now for the 1/72 Gato:
