Ahoy mates. I got some work done on Verlinden's 1/200 CSS Virginia. Like most Verlinden ironclad kits, it goes together very well and pretty quick. I've had to scratch build the davits. Lost the kit ones somewhere. The armor plate covering the rudder is slightly warped. I'll fix that with hot water.

These are Civil War figures I plan to display on the base.

Hi Kenny,

Great looking kit, looking forward to seeing what you do with it.
Like the figures as well (more up my street)

I don't know a hell of a lot about the ironclads but looking at your kit they obviously put a lot into protecting the crew but then left their lifeline as in the life boats completely exposed to enemy fire.

All the best

I like! I Like!

I also like the figures. Very nicely molded and detailed but you know, the first thing I thought of when looking at them and the position they are standing....Saturday Night Fever.

Now the Bee Gees will be stuck in my head all evening.

I am not sure, but I think that the skipper of the Virginia was associated with VMI in some capacity.

Here's an update.
I've got the black on the hull and the casemate. I've sprayed a light coating of a metallic rust color on the casemate though you can't see it. I've base coated the decks Tamiya wood and will go back with Tamiya buff on some of the planks and then a darker color on some more of the planks.

The wood pieces to the right are the beginnings of the flag staffs.

Ahoy mates!

Here's the latest on the CSS Virginia. I've hollowed out the stack, re-rigged the support wires, painted the deck and added the flag staffs. I've got the small boats primed and ready for paint and the canvas covers. Should I lay them flat across the boat or add arched ribbing first?

Don't know if you can see it, but I used various shades of tan for the deck.

Looks real fine Kenny. Here's hoping you will add to your collection of these extremely interesting ships and share the builds with us as well.

very nice painting and handsome model, I like the way you painted the wood planks. I am wondering how you will manage to get away with the 2 big figs and a water base for the Virginia -it should end up looking like one of those museum commemorative scene I suppose?
nice work anyway

I had planned on placing the figures by the name plate. If you guys don't think it will work, then I'll ditch the figures.

I think that's a matter of how you want your diorama to look like, or more accurately shall i say, what you want to show.
If you leave it like this without the fig, you are doing a diorama (and a mightly fine apparently)
If you add the figs, you transform what you do in a sort of big 3D commemorative medal of sorts if you see what i mean, something that says "we fought and die for etc etc, long live the men in our memories"
the choice is yours

Kenny I love the look of the cannon smoke.

As for the figures try them and see how it looks.

Ken,

I like what you have done so far. I am just getting my feet wet in the hobby, have done a lot of armor kits and a couple of winged thingees.

You used flat black , matt black or something like locomotive black for the iron work on the boat? I have this and the Monitor and have been trying to figure out how to do the colors. Were the boats painted black or was they left "natural"? I would think that regular iron would rust like crazy in a salty location like Hampton Roads.

I would like to do the CSS Tennesee and USS Hartford at the Battle of Mobile Bay, but for some reason the old Aurora Hartford kit is rather pricey.

Hey Jim,

I had the same questions when I started my Virginia build. Research tell you what it is made of but not how they treated the metal. From what I've read, I came to the conclusion that since they used iron, the finished product was similar if not the same to a cast iron stove or pot. As far as how they weather proofed it, I believe it was on the same line as how they built locomotives. It would make since that they painted it black to prevent it from rusting. Also remember that any finish that would have been applied to the Monitor and the Virginia would have been fairly fresh, that is, without wear and rust, as this was the first time these two ships saw action.

One thing of note about the Verlinden USS Monitor, it is in a post-Hampton Roads configuration. At Hampton Roads, the pilot house had vertical sides and not the sloped ones you see on the kit. The captain of the Monitor insisted these changes be made after a shot from the Virginia bounced of the pilot house.

Update on the Virginia. I've got the base almost done. The water needs some gloss coat and maybe a water splash. The rectangle on the right hand corner is where the figures will go.

Great model and great overall presentation! If the figures are going over on the lower right, will the nameplate go on the bottom strip? and what type of information will you engrave on the plate?
