HI All,
Following on (sort of) from Gator's thread what would you consider the top 10 fictional vessels (It has to float on the sea or travel under the sea though. No starships or airships) from books or films.
Here are mine in no particular order:
USS Cunningham from James Cobb's novels
The Nautilus of Jules Verne/Disney fame
HMS Ulysses Macleans cruiser
Red October from Tom Clancy
HMS Hyperion a 74 gun ship of the line by Alexander Kent
USS Liberator from David Mace's post WW 3 novel
USS Barracuda a Skipjack class SSN from the novel 'To Kill the Potemkin'
HMS Suprise captained by Jack Aubrey
HMS Sutherland of Hornblower fame
and
HMS Compass Rose in 'The Cruel Sea'

Let's see...

The most recognizable ~ USS Sea Tiger from Operation Petticoat

The coolest ~ (tie) Nautilus from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, seaQuest DSV 4600, SSRN Seaview and Flying Sub FS-1 from Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea

And my personal favorites:
HMS Surprise ~ who wouldn't want to sail with Lucky Jack
USS Belinda ~ Away All Boats
MS Ergenstrasse ~ who wouldn't want to sail with Lana Turner

Or maybe a firecracker!

That is a really good movie. You know there had to be a ship like that in WWII.

I remember Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea well and I did think of including Seaview in my top 10 but I could never figure out why the USN would put a boomer under the control of a civilian agency?
I also considered Thunderbird 4 and Stingray

In reading "Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailor", either the crew of the Heermann or the Hoel did put marbles in the captain's overhead.

Dragon also did a 1/350th Dallas vs. Alfa. GMW (Great Models Web Store) I believe is taking pre-orders for a re-release of this kit.

2) HMS Surprise

4) Seaview
5) Titanic
6) Miss Budweiser
6) Ok, really...the Sea Quest

Ican't think of ten. I liked Thunderbird 4 but not as much as Thunderbird 2.

You took two out of three of them out of my mouth Steve, I also forgot the Black Pearl.

HMS Lydia from Beat to Quarters, aka The Happy Return, aka Captain Horatio Hornblower. HMS Sutherland, from Ship of the Line. And The Witch of Endor from Flying Colors. All great choices but of the three the Sutherland holds a place in my heart.

All three were in the Peck movie, though Sutherland kind of gets glossed over. The movie is a compilation of the first three books, Beat to Quarters, which is the American name for the British book The Happy Return, Ship of the Line, and Flying Colors.

If I'm not mistaken in the movie the Sutherland is referred to as French built, while in the book she was Dutch. This is used several times to fool the French.
