Hi all,
Here are a few pics of my ongoing PT boat build. I plan on doing a boat tied up to a dock with the crew loading supplied and prepping the boat to get underway. The boat sat on my shelf for the better part of a year while I figured out what to do with it. There's a lot of dust that needs to be removed. Also, plenty of weathering and detail painting to do.
Here's an overall shot of the boat and the first rev of the dock.

The after deck house

The wheel house

The torpedoes and weapons

Lastly, here's a pic of a DML Marine figure that I'm modifying to represent a Sailor. I'm playing with shades of blue and gray to get the colors matched for a faded Chambray shift and dungaree pants. I spent 20 years in the US Navy, ya think this would be easy!

Any comments, critiques or suggestions are gratefully accepted and encouraged.

Hi Bruce.
Thanks for the positive comments. I hear ya on the sun-faded dock. Working on that now. I'm trying different combinations of oil washes to simulate the faded color of pine. I would imagine, in the South Pacific, the wood would be bleached by the sun.

Looking good so far. For fading wood, mix some vinegar and steel wool together, let it set over night and then brush it on the wood areas. It'll fade/bleach it out. "Q"

Hi Jim,
Thanks for those links. I've heard about Italeri releasing a PT Boat crew, but those are the first pics I've seen of them. I'll have to get them and see if I can adapt them to my setting.

Mark,
Thanks for the comments. Rev 1 of the dock is much longer, almost the length of the boat now.
Have you seen Mike Benolkin's PT build? Here's the link
http://www.cybermodeler.com/hobby/builds/it/build_it_5602.shtmlHe also has a dio in progress as well.
http://www.cybermodeler.com/hobby/builds/custom/build_pier.shtmlI adapted his scene for my build, but I'm not using an L shaped dock.

Hi Ed,
Love the kit. I had been planning on scratchbuilding a PT Boat for years. When Italeri announced theirs, I was ECSTATIC!
Great build. I saw pics of this somewhere else and I had a question. Where did you get the extra 20mm Oerlikons?

Thanks Jim. I appreciate the comments. Still got lots of detail painting to do on the torps and guns.

Thanks. I made molds and cast them and the mounts. I had never done that before but after a couple of tries it came out OK. I also cast the extra 20mm ammo cans, 20mm Ready Service lockers and second smoke canister (a crewman of the 495 told me they carried 2 on this particular boat).

Hi Ed,
Yup, I figured you cast them yourself. I was hoping to hear that you bought them from somewhere. I'm attempting to cast my own 40mm ammo cans, but the first try didn't come out so well. I need about 10-15 of these cans for my dock scene and casting is the only option. I'll get it right soon, I"m sure.

A dock update for my PT Boat Dio. Here's an overall shot of the dock. I painted the base underneath the dock raw umber and the exposed portion Olive green.

And here's an up close of the dock halfway through the planking process.

The 'white" planks are going to look brand new because I'd like to portray them as repaired areas. The remaining ones are going to be faded and treated to look sun bleached.
Thanks for looking and all comments are welcome.

Hi Steve,
Nice work. I don't know if they woudl be of any use to you but Italeir have a set of figures coming out for the ELCO Boat. There are some good ones around in resin too.
Look forward to seeing more.

Hi Alan,
Thanks for the comments. Unfortunately, the PT Crew announced by Italeri won't work in the scene that I"m doing. The pics I've seen of the crew have thier life jackets on and posed as if they were at thier battle stations. My crew needs to be working on loading the boat and readying their weapons prior to a patrol.

Did you see Shaun's (Muddyfields) PT Dio? He put together a crew that looks really good. maybe he can point you in the right direction.

Hi Steve,
Either MiniArt or MB make a couple of German Tank maintenance crews which would convert fairly easily to sailors as they have trousers and shirts. I used some for my coal crane as civilians and a couple as RN sailors. They wouldm probably have the sort of poses you're looking for.
Cheers
Al
