Hi all

This is one of my three current projects, the Aoshima 1/700 CVE Unyo.
As reference I am using Model Art Special Waterline series Magazine #18, which depicts the IJN small carriers. All of the Taiyo class carriers are there, and although I have Unyo and Chuyo, I decided to attack the first one first.
It will show the short flight deck, opposite to the kits flight deck and to Chuyo which will also be made, latter.

All the white parts are evergreen, the grey kit parts
You can notice the amount of work to make it as accurate as possible

Cheers,
Rui

Darn Skip you like to work on those hard ones don't you.

Looks like it should be an interesting build.

MmmHmmm, Rui, you never fail to spark my interest with your choice in build subjects, mate...

Looks to be a bit of a challenge from the get-go, there seems to be almost more evergreen than gray, my friend...
Thanks for sharing this build with us Skip, will be watching your progress closely (as always!).........

Yes, there's more white than grey
So far I have only used three (!!) kit parts and have already scratch about... thirty.
This built started after a friendly discussion during Modeltroia contest with Filipe and Pedro.
All of us should make a WWII ship, camouflaged, in a sea base (simple presentation - no diorama!), any nation, in 1/700 - to be shown on our club expo (9th - 11th May) and to be completed as soon as possible - and again shown together, sort of to show that not all ships are light grey and dark grey
It was a good challenge, and I decided to go with this carrier - amongst many other options from the stash...
Of course, accuracy would be on top of the list, so, here I am again in the middle of a project "not out of the box"!

Progress shown as soon as possible
Cheers,
Rui

Hi Rui,

Great start to your Unyo. You've done the smart thing with this model, and left off most of the original parts! I built her up mainly OOB with a little P.E. for some detail years back and I remember how much of a pain this model was.

You have inspired me to purchase reference material, I have an order from HLJ for a dozen or so books on the IJN. Most of them are the new CG image books which are quite detailed and should prove invaluable for modelling purposes.

I look forward to your build updates Rui,

Frank

Wow, what a really nice start, Rui! I'm really blown away by what you've done so far and am really curious to see how this will end up! The Unyo is such a weird little ship- I love it!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh, found it.....your secret project!!!!!!
Just kidding...good to see that the carrier is improving. Myself I have made up my mind to which one to go for and after the conversation we held last time with Pedro, Graf Spee is the elected one...pittyful the model is terrible and drastic measures (nearly chain-saw tactics) are being used!!!!!!
Keep them coming,

Filipe

Hi guys!

Thanks for the support
Here's a little update:
- Hull reinforcements made;
- Port side portholes drilled in the right place;
- Some more PE doors and hatches attached (from GMM);
- Winch scratchbuilt.

Of course, comments are most welcome
Cheers,
Rui

That is a great building project skipper, i will never look at a 700 water line model as 'easy" anymore!

You can make it simple, but is a question of "do you feel comfortable" to make some changes (read upgrades) on your little boat (as often these small scale ships are called in our expo's - most persons don't even stop and take care to look properly at these models, since they are so small - and stop by the planes and obviously at the armour and dio tables)
Once you decide to go the extra mile, you can never stop, because all (most of them anyway) look blunt and always missing something
Although I am a slow worker, I like what I am doing - and I am also learning during the process

Thanks to all who are giving support
Back to the workbench - updates asap

Thanks Mark - actually, so do I!

I have a doubt, that came after trying to scratchbuilt the flight deck.
So, the question is:
- During 1944, does the Unyo had a long flight deck (as show in the kit box art and also in some of the plans (camouflage plans) on ModelArt special warship magazine Nș18) or had the short flight deck (as shown in the Unyo and Taiyo big plans, Chuyo had the long one)?

Any enlightenment on this issue would be helpful

Not exactly an answer to your question given that flattops are not usually my cup of tea but how are you going to do the flight-deck? Ultra-thin plastic card? I guess I was distracted with that Warship Profile of Graf Spee when you were talking with Pedro about the flight deck!!!!! In any case, if it was me I would have choose plastic card though I wouldn't go to the most thin one...it's way too fragile!!! Right, in any case...back to scratchbuilding the deck of Graf Spee!!!!!!

hello Rui,
according to my book the deck measurements were:
length 591ft 4 inch over all,569 ft 11 inch waterline length.551ft 2inch between perpendiculars.it also states the flight deck is 5641/4ft x77ft..i also have a side line drawling if you need it..
hopes this helps.
cheers,
Bruce

I have decided last night on scratchbuilding it. I already have it made, just need to check if it has the long "nose" or not
I used 0.5 mm for top part and it will have 1 mm under for reinforcement - and will also be secured by perforated bars

Yes it helped Bruce - that matches the length of Chuyo's long flight deck
I have top and side line drawings - but thanks for the offer.
Can I ask what book it is, please?
Cheers and thanks,
Rui

Ok, guys...

Now that my doubt about the length of the flight deck was kindly answered and solved, here's the result of my last two nights work:
The new flight deck, which started as plain evergreen sheet... scribed the wooden areas, keeping the metal areas untouched (at least I tried) and then make several hundred holes on the deck...

Still need to scribe the elevators (thinking of letting one in the lower position) and I will scratchbuilt the wind deflector in open position, add anti skid plates on the edge and drain plates on the edges (the last two details will be made using Lionroar PE sets).
Also, it needs to glue another equal evergreen part underneath to give it height and also to be reinforced with perforated bars on the bow and stern areas, agin this will be PE parts.
Need also to make the distinctive curve on the beginning - or end, depends on the view - of the flight deck... before starting to apply the reinforcements.
As usual comments/critics are most welcome
Rui
