Hi James

OOB means that you have to build the model with what you have in the box, with the exception of paint and glue
That's why the rigging (for example) must be made with streched sprue - that you get with your model.
You also need to follow the instructions, and make no extra improvements (other than removing seam lines, sink holes, etc)
Any other parts added even if scratchbuild and you will fall into the other category.

Hope this helps,
Rui

Just a quick clarification, in the OOB build there is no rigging allowed, of any kind. The idea behind the OOB build contest is to allow modellers to concentrate on the basics, construction and painting.

Okay, talking about those Lion Roar sets in other topics has pretty much made up my mind...

Name: Dade W. Bell
Callsign: Karybdis
Build: IJN Hiryu
Company: Aoshima
Type of build: Full Build

This will have all that wacky Lion Roar after market stuff (PE deck, etc.). This is subject to change after Modelpalooza next weekend (I may find some crazy model there that inspires me), but it's basically a lock.

Sounds great, my friend...but like you said, Modelpalooza could change things for ya!

Ahoy, mates!

We have seven crew-members signed on thus far in this contest, with room for lot's more, so how about it?

Why not sign on, and build a model with your mates? Do you belong to a local modeling club, with other modelers with the same interest? Well, invite them to the site, and to join in with the festivities!

This contest is more than just a model building contest, it is a genuine effort to help our community here at MSW to grow bigger and better, and to aid the ship-building area of our hobby to continue to evolve and grow in a positive direction, and to accomplish this, we need all of your help and input!

So c'mon, don't be shy and hold back....sign up today and start planning your build, June 1st is right around the corner mates, and you have a full year to complete your build...I promise you won't be dissapointed, and you'll make a heap of new friends in the process as well through regular forum communication as you build your model (and have a chance at some uber prizes!)................

So, whaddaya' waitin for?!?

Ahoy, ye maties!

Well, we're halfway through the official sign-up period for the "MSW Community Build Contest", only 15 more days to go to sign-up and gather your materials for the official start date!

Are you ready?....make sure that you are planning to have all of your stuff ready for your individual contest "BLOG" thread as per contest rules, and remember, if you're still waiting for materials to arrive, please provide some sort of proof of purchase/ordering for said materials (invoice copy, screen shot of confirmation, etc.) just to be fair to all entrants....

As of today (2008-05-15) our roster is as follows:

OOB Category
1.) James Martiney (JMartine)
2.) Bruce Miller (grayghost666)

Full Build Category
1.) Nanond NOPPARAT (Nanond)
2.) TAWATCHAI (panda2551)
3.) Niels M. Frederiksen (KrokoHunter)
4.) Barry Lesht (DrDull)
5.) Dade W. Bell (Karybdis)
6.) Chris (sapguy)

We have lots of room for more entrants, mates, please sign up today and participate in this effort to build our Community (and a ship model ) here at MSW!

Remember, that the main idea of this contest is to attract new members and any "lurkers" to our community, and enjoy the reason why we're all here at the site, which is....to build and enjoy ship models!

What better a way to move into our active community than to participate in this year long build contest, and get to know your mates while building our camaraderie together in the brotherhood of ship model building........and at the end, have a chance at taking home an uber prize!

So come on, mates. sign on today and lets make this a most memorable event!!!

Gunny - I posted a blurb on the build in the FSM Forum, Ship section.

I also have a quick "logitics" question: I will be flying to my niece's wedding May 31-Jun 2, so i will not be able to take the "sprues/newspaper date" picture until Jun 3. Is this ok? Should I also take a pic May 30 to show I bought the kit already, then in Jun 3 to show it was not started before June 1?

Cheers, James

Hi James,
After careful consideration and discussion, we have arrived at a decision to allow this as a "fix" for your being away from your home port for the start of the contest, mate.

OK - I'm a little confused. Is June 1 a 'hard' start date, by which I mean we must all start on that same day? I've ordered my Buchanan kit, but it hasn't arrived. Though I certainly hope it gets here soon, I have no control over that. I had thought that we could start any time after June 1 and use the photo as documentation. Do I have that wrong?

Also - where (which forum) do we blog our progress? Sorry for the questions, but this is a little new to me.

Thanks! Barry

Hi Barry!
Questions, no problem, mate...
You can begin building at any time after the June 1st start date, BUT....on that date, is when you must have your materials (or some sort of proof of purchase, ie, copy of invoice, order confirmation, etc) displayed in your contest blog (in the Fleet Maneuvers Forum, btw ) to be fair to all entrants...

uh, so does that mean that I have to KNOW exactly what photoetch scrap I'm going to use?... I'm sure I'll be hitting my scrap box for some things, but at this point I don't know what... So how am I supposed to put it in the pic? Same goes for small weapons and aircraft... I figured I had a year to source fiddly bits...

Chris, as per contest rules, yes...
"(vii) First photo of the build blog must be of the model parts, still on their sprues and any aftermarket parts along side, all next to your selection of local newsprint, with the date fully visible… this is to ensure that no one starts with an advantage.

Well I guess before times runs out I’ll let you guys know I’m in.

I’ll be entering the 1/350 USS Gettysburg in the full build contest.
Going to add some PE to it, do the rigging, and “scratch build” a display stand.

Aye, Keith, welcome aboard!

As per contest rules, mate,
"vii) The modeler will start a build blog on MSW at the start of the contest (June 1st) to display the progress of the build. At the end of each month, the builder must have between 5 to 10 photos which the staff will use to judge the entries.
(viii) First photo of the build blog must be of the model parts, still on their sprues and next to your selection of local newsprint, with the date fully visible… this is to ensure that no one starts with an advantage."

The thread should be placed in the "Fleet Maneuvers" forum section for group builds, and if you don't have all the materials on the start date, some sort of proof of purchase will suffice (order confirmation, invoice, etc...a screen shot is fine)...
